Being that this subject comes up from time to time, I thought I would post this for some of the newer folks who have not seen this. Look up your state, and get edge-u-cated (bad pun, sorry) about your state's carry laws.

And always remember, if you get busted on carrying an illegal knife, you probably have worse things to worry about.

Knife carry laws

"Edge-u-cation" is used by Spyderco on thier website, so it's not bad.

I've also come across, packing.org. It's more firearm oriented than knife, but it's still a good place to check.

Thanks, I'm in MD so now I know I can only use a knife in my house since it's illegal to carry it anyware.

Here is what I found in the Maryland state code:
(5) (i) "Weapon" includes a dirk knife, bowie knife, switchblade knife, star knife, sandclub, metal knuckles, razor, and nunchaku.
(ii) "Weapon" does not include:
1. a handgun; or
2. a penknife without a switchblade.

The category "weapon" is what is not allowed, apparently, and so a "penknife without a switchblade" is apparently legal. The question seems to be, "What is a penknife? Does is expand to include any folding knife? Does a large blade disqualify it from being a 'penknife'?"

For those of us living behind the iron curtin in the Democratik Republik of Kalifornia... Here is the latest updated Dangerous Wepons Control laws coverin knives, guns, sticks, fireworks etc. etc. :

Just page after page of mind numbing stupidity...Read carefully because sprinkled in amongst the silliness is information you might need to stay out of jail.

I live in Texas and from that first link, it almost seems to say that if you have a CHL you can carry an otherwise illegal knife into any place that you can carry your gun into... strange I never noticed that before.

Either way I think it would be a good idea to carry around a copy of the penal code whenever you are carrying a blade that might be considered questionable. LEOs have stopped me before when carrying a blade of only 4 inches (texas allows up to 5.5) just because it "looked" longer. A lot of it is up for the LEO to determine. Not every one of them knows every law to the letter. Best bet is to not carry anything menacing looking, though I do tote around a custom karambit from time to time.
