Fortunately, before dark the group found Osier Station, which serves as a summer stop on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.

Able to break in, the families found shelter from the wind and snow, and items to help them wait out the storm, including a propane grill.

How hard did it snow?

"We went out (on snowmobiles) to try and find cell phone reception, but it was snowing so hard we didn't think we'd get back (to the cabin)," said Shannon Groen of the snowfall, which officials in Chama estimated at 8-inches-per-hour at times.

The place where the family broke in was near my house in Colorado
They picked a GREAT building to break in to
They serve a full course lunch cafeteria style when you ride the Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad

The other incident that comes to my mind is the James Kim story===>
Lost in the snowy wilderness and seeking help for his stranded family, James Kim probably traveled more than 10 miles on foot before he died, believing he could find a nearby town, authorities said Thursday. An autopsy showed that he died alone of hypothermia. Authorities said when his body was found in a creek's shallow water on Wednesday, he was about a mile away from a fishing lodge stacked with food.

"James Kim did nothing wrong. He was trying to save his family," said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police said a Thursday news conference. "He thought that if he could get to the river, he could make it to the town."

Kim thought the nearby town of Galice was only 4 miles away, although it was really 15 miles, Hastings said. Just a mile or so down the road, however, was a fishing lodge where he could have found shelter, warmth, and enough food for months.

"It would have been a beautiful ending to sad story," said John James, the owner of the nearby Black Bar Lodge.

I guess these are good examples of know your surroundings
And if possible note the locations of cabins/train stations along the way

What kind of survival knives are good for breaking into buildings?
The RAZR??!!!!!! ;)
If Mr. Lightning shows me a demo video of a RAZR busting off some door hinges I'll buy one......:D

Yeah, arguably breaking in buildings is Ok in a genuine emergency situation but nowadays, most cabins have turned into safes with steel curtains and doors, bars on windows...

Not so far ago, cabins would be completly open, with some firewood ready and even some food supply left on occasions. But some many people have devasted, left them dirty with loads of trash, or have stolen all that wasn't bolted to the ground and destroyed anything else, that this is no longer possible.

Yeah, these days, breaking into a building during an emergency, could be a life altering experience and not necessarily for the good.
