New comer has lots question to ask....haha, hope is alright for most of you guys. I would like to know more about steel that makers use on their knives. S30V, VG10, D2, 440ABC....etc. Wishing to there is a data that i could read and expand my knowledge of them, compare them. Pros and Cons.

Any body has a website in handy? or a book to recommand?

i found it is easier to find data about 440 steel, but not easy for S30V, VG10. most important, i can't find a site that really compare them side by side. Wish you guys can help. thanks for reading my needs.

This is the 3rd time I'm moving your posts out of Community and into the correct forum.

READ THE ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE TOP OF COMMUNITY! YOU ARE POSTING IN THE WRONG FORUM!

Only thing I know is Crusible Data Sheets, here my compilation of their pictures:

And similar picturw for Japanese steel:

Here my composition table:

(scroll down few pages if you don't read Russian)

However it is not only about steel but about method it was made and HT. For example steel prepared with electro slug remelting is different then same steel without. Many makers have propritory HT - Busse, Fehrman...

Thanks, Vassili.

Wuyeah,

This is one of my favorite topics. Here goes.

Different steels are made in different countries and sometime hard to find in a knife made in a country that doesn't make the steel. Spyderco comes to mind.

Here are some steel discussion links that may be of help.

I follow the maker/sharpener forums/threads and the folks much more experienced and smarter than me say that too often "steel" gets all the attention and that this wrong when considering a knife to buy.

The heat treatment of the steel, the design and grind of the blade, the type of handle, etc. are all equally if not more important than the type of steel.

All reputable makers are probably using decent knife steel or they won't be around long.

One of the most famous custom maker used ATS-34 but then switched
BG-42. His name was Loveless something or other.

Spyderco used an interesting steel but I'm not sure why. I think it must save some bucks in manufacturing costs. It is VG-10. When you look at the steel types tables look for steels with cobalt. You will hardly find any. My power drills all have cobalt tips. Not sure exactly what it does. Other companies won't use it because it is made in the orient (Japan?) as is the ZDP steel I think.

Thoughts?
