Does anyone care to explain what happens to steel when it is ground by someone and they heat the steel too much. Does it create a hard or soft spot and why. I have heard differing views on this and I know you guys know the real deal.
Thanks in advance

If it is a steel that has been hardened and it is gets hot it will make the steel softer (it tempers the steel). It needs to get pretty hot though, hot enough to cause discoloration of the steel.

If the steel is soft and it gets hot, depending on the steel, it could make it a little harder.

This is basically how it works but it depends on the steel and how hot it gets. I'm sure a more knowledgeable person will be along to go more in-depth.
