Gouge... really nice knife. I like the contrast with the brass pins and steel. I have to ask! what is the recipe for staining the slabs with potassium permanginate? I have some exceptional exhibition grade birds eye maple that I have been holding off on using until I can get the perfect stain and yours is damn fine.
thanks Jim Ziegler

Looks real mean, but you defenatly need to change the name! I never thought oak could look so good, it realy looks great!

Whoa! Mark, that's one wicked looking bad boy. What a grind! And a major handful too. I like the brass and steel bolsters too. Fine work, thanks for sharing. I bet BB will chime in with the stain formula.

Thanks for all the kind words fellas.I wasn't sure about how the brass pins would look until it was finished. But I think it looks kinda cool also as there is no doubt about if it has pins.
The pottasium permanganate is some pretty amazing stuff. It will definately stain anything well including your fingers. I guess it was about 2 heaping table spoons in a quart jar of distilled water. I basically just plunked the slabs into the jar for about 1 minute. If you are doing birdseye maple, I would brush it on and heat with heat gun to see how dark it gets. There is another chemical, something chromium that is supposed to give more of the translucent effect. Maybe someone else will know. Thanks again for all the compliments.
