Finally finished up this 80CrV2 hunter. Handle is stabilized curly Koa. There are several “issues” with the knife, but the 10 year old new owner seems to think it’s pretty cool. So, I’m willing to call it good.

That's a beauty. Did you do the coke bottle handle with just files/sand paper?

No, I do the heavy lifting on the grinder. I get the angle of the scales where I want them on the flat platen (thinner are the front, thicker at the back). Then I use a contact wheel for the curved portions on the back half. I find it really important (for me) to mark everything I can for reference lines when doing these. It can easily get away from me and keeping the grind lines on top and bottom of the handle meeting up/being even is challenging.

Once that’s all done, I move to files/rasps, then paper to blend it all and round the edges to what I want. Hope all that makes sense....

Makes sense to me. I've been trying to figure out if I can do a coke bottle shape with a platen and 2" idler wheels.

Hmmmmm.... I feel like a 2” wheel would be tough. At least how I hold the handle against the wheel. I use an 8”.

Yeah you can, it'll just take a little bit of finesse. Draw in your lines on the sides of the handle and just sneak up on them. You can do it!

I use the 2” wheel for shaping these handles.

Well, there you go-couple of guys obviously do it well with a smaller wheels. It’s always a good reminder for me of how many people can accomplish a given task with different tools by adjusting the process a little.

10" wheel tilted to horizontal is great for shaping handles. I just freehand mine, should probably spend a little time drawing out lines though.
After that I take it to the slack grinding attachment with scalloped belts for rounding off.
