Hey guys, brand new to the forum and hoping for some help. I’ve owned a bunch of CS folders and loved them all and finally purchased my first CS fixed blade, the Kobun. While I like the knife and the design of the sheath I have almost zero retention. Basically if you turn the sheath upside down it just falls out. Does anybody else have any retention issues with their sheath, is this normal for CS sheaths? Thanks in advance!

With the Kobun sheath you must be sure to push the knife completely into the sheath until you hear it click or feel it catch. If it freefalls when you turn it upside down, you did not get it in completely.

That’s the problem, the Kobun sheath doesn’t click. It’s like the sheath is loose, and the way the shape of the sheath is there’s nothing to click once the knife goes in. I have plenty of other fixed blades that all click into their respective sheaths but the Kobun does not. I’ve made sure to push it in all the way but the issue seems to be with the shape/design of the sheath.

My sheath does not have a tight fit at the top and I’m wondering if that has something to do with it. If your sheaths retain the knife properly then that’s great, mine does not.

When I was selling these at Gun & Knife shows I handled well over 100 of these and some might seem like they were in all the way but would fall out if they were inverted, and after a very firm reseating, they would go in and catch. Suggestion: place the knife in the sheath, hold upright while placing the sheath on a hard object (table or bench), then holding by the handle and using your body weight, try pushing the knife deeper in the sheath ... it should go and get easier after a few strong pushes. I never had one that did not seat completely.

The sheaths are mass produced, so there will be slight differences in fit, but like Mike, I have never had one that loose. Did you buy it brand new, or used? There have been a few generations of Kobun over the years, so if it was used i wonder if maybe the previous owner broke/lost the original sheath and bought a replacement from a different generation, and the fit is just way off. If it was brand new, then it's either not seated all the way like Mike said, or there is a defect and you may want see about returning it under warranty.
