Got a Cold Steel Kobun several years ago and it has served me well as a general purpose knife. Decided to get one for my grandson. His is marked AUS8 but my first one has no markings. Does anyone know if AUS8 was used on all of the Kobuns?

I think the Kobun has been made over the years in Carbon V, 420, 4116, and AUS-8. You'd know the Carbon V, as it would be black coated. I think the 420 versions were bead blasted and were phased out many years ago. If yours was purchased within the last 10 years and has a satin finish (same finish as the current ones) on the steel, but is unmarked (in terms of the steel used), it's probably the 4116 version.

Carbon v Kobun ?? Would love to get my hands on that.

Here is a breakdown of the Kobun steels, based on the archived catalogs:

1996/97: Introduced, in AUS8A
2000: Added Carbon V model
2001: Change from AUS8A to bead-blasted 420 sub-zero quench
2003: Last year for Carbon V model
2006: Change back to AUS8A, but still says bead-blasted (wonder if this is a typo)
2007: Change to 4116
2008-2009: Not shown in catalog
2010-Present: Change back to AUS8A

Many thanks, J.

I really like the Kobun. This blade, a Mora, or weight/size top end that my wife is willing to wear is an SRK. Whether it is just whistling in the dark or not, some steel on the hip while in islolated bush looking for mushrooms, fishing etc., with bitey scratchy critters around, makes us feel a little better. And there is also the practical side of having cutting tools for shelter and fire building.

I wish CS would make a Kobun in 3V (or even XHP), I like the size and shape of the Kobun, but I really don't like AUS-8, I only have bad experience of it. A Carbon V version would also be interesting, but I'd rather try one in 3V if CS decided to make it.

the steel is good enough for Scarlett Johansson...;)

I purchased a pair of Kobuns in the late 90's early 2000's. The sheaths had a platic clip molded on the back that let you clip them to the inside of your front pocket much like a folder. Did they ever make Kobuns with a serrated edge?

they did a SE version indeed, very rare and much sought after nowadays (they go for crazy prices)
