Kochanski bush winch...

I saw that but didn't understand it, and there aren't actual instructions.

Mors Kochanski wrote a series of little booklets on various bushcraft skills (some of which didn't make it into his book). One of them is "Top 7 bushcraft knots and use of the windlass." I picked it up from bensbackwoods for cheap, & it shows a couple of variations of this flipflop winch/windlass & how to tie & use them. It's impressive to know they can move a car like that.

I would much rather have learned from him directly though!

edit: Joben, I must've replied at the same time you were typing that. If you want some instructions, look online about the "Spanish windlass" or the "flip flop winch," or pick up that booklet. It's got some other cool stuff in it too.

I have never used or even studied that two-log winch. It looks very powerful.
Can you do it with one man?

I imagine it could be quite dangerous if one of the logs gets loose.

I can think of a few times when this lash up would have saved me a bit of walking.

Is one end tied to the car , the winch in the middle ,then the other end anchored onto something solid?

Exactly. One of the saplings acts as a take-up drum that 'shortens' the rope between the car and the anchor point, and since the anchor doesn't move, the car has to.

I couldnt figure it out until I tried it with string and 2 pencils. Amazingly simple! The only limitation is the strength of your rope.--KV
