hi. while i was playing with the william henry that i posted about yesterday, i noticed a potential problem with my koji folder.

i bought it from mr. hara a few years back at a show when he was in the usa.

it has been in a drawer pretty much ever since. before it went in the drawer it was completely oiled with militec. well when i took it out yesterday i noticed that the inside frame has ugly brown spots all over it that look like chicken pox and the the bolsters(exterior) have discoloration like when you overheat stainless steel. is this metal defective or something? can something wipe off this discoloration? i have lots of quality and also cheap knives and have never seen this before. it is not rust as far as i can tell.
he uses several thin layers of stainless hammered together to make his bolsters maybe that has something to do with it?

thanks.
jay.

Could it be some kind of bacteria or spores eating the lubricant, colonizing and the dying off in some microscopic life/death drama being played out in your drawer?

that actually sounds very possible to me(i assume you were not making a joke). however, i do not think the militec has any organic compounds.
if it does this could be the problem. the drawer is dark and perfect breeding goound for this action. mineral oil will always do this.

strange thing is it seems that it will not rub off. well, actually i can't get anything stiff enough into the frame to "scrub" it. if those nasties are present it could be they actually ate the metal while feeding off the militec. or that once they consumed the militec the breakdown of the molecular structure etched the metal. darnit, this was a nice knife and not too cheap either.

maybe i can try flitz or mothers on it?

thanks.
