I recently acquired a Konustar compass with clinometer and sighting eyepiece etc. I bought it second hand and don't have instructions. I have e-mailed Konus directly, but have not received anything from them yet. Does anybody have one of these? Do you have a set of instructions perhaps? Is it a good compass? Thank you very much.

I'd been looking around for a good compass for a while, so I'd seen the Konus name a number of times.

Konus is an Italian company specializing in telescopes, microscopes, magnifying lenses, spotting scopes, different temperature reading devices, and, as you know, compasses. They're rather well known in Europe, from what I understand, and make a quality product.

Did you email Konus in Italy, or their US office in Miami?

Where did you find the compass? There's a fella on eBay with a company called True North Trading Company that carries some of the Konus items. He seems to specialize in compasses and the like, and does basic service on Brunton and some of the earlier Ainsbrough pocket transits. He might be able to get you the info you need. You could do a search on eBay with "Konus compass", "Brunton compass", "Brunton transit" and see if you can track the guy down. I might have his email around, if you need it I'll hunt around and try to dig it up.

Say what you will about GPS, when the batteries die, the compass is king. :)

Thanks DonL. I bought it at a second-hand goods store. I paid the equivalent of about US$15!!!!! It is quite heavy though, but I agree, the compass is still king.

I saw all the web sites of Konus and I e-mailed the mother company in Italy. Still have not heard though, and it's been almost a week. Rather poor I'd say for service that is. The product itself is pretty cool though.

i have used the military compas with tritium. well worth looking for one on ebay.
the konus cumpas is ok. stickers on the side are a joke, sturdy yes, but if i knew it was made in china, i would have shopped elseware. it wont last for long.
