Is that shape just in front of the cho typical, or are these maybe re-ground for some reason?

I don't think that blade has been reground or altered in any way. It has the smell of a good, solid village kami to me but I've been wrong before.

are these maybe re-ground for some reason?

We have had a few examples posted on these forums. They seem to be purpose made, probably in India. The sheaths are particularly nice on these knives. If they had simply been sharpened down the edge would have been well into the softer part of the blade making it unusable.

are these likely made by Nepalis in Burma? (as opposed to being made by Burmans, I mean)

I think N2 has it right again. This variant has no origins or specificity to Burma or Assam. The only kukri I have found that was made for use in these areas was a striking model with a polished steel grip and blued blade. It was made for the Kubo Valley Police around 1870/1880.

I do find it interesting that this isn't a 'one-off' model and who knows how many were made.

These are mid to late 20thc pieces and the ones I've seen and the one I handled were of a decent quality although the blade didn't seem tempered properly. The scabbards are well done although having the k&c on the front wouldn't be practical in a combat situation.

JDP,
Hers a few of questions you have "never" been asked!! 1)How many different K's do you estimate you have handled?? 2)What is the most $$$ you have ever seen placed on a K 3)(This one is my fav. question for you)!Which K either got away from you that you wish you had or Which one is out there that you know about, but have not been able to locate!!
THE SAINT!
PS- Any more of the "INFAMOUS" JP K's going up for bid again??:D
