by most non knife people's standard, any custom knife is likely exotic.

Utility is usually my aim whenever I buy a custom, although I can totally see inherent value in well designed, but more artist knives. I just usually can't justify buying them, until now.

See, to me, value is the name of the game. Value does come with a price.
As a good friend of mine often states, (with regards to mountain bikes generally, but it can apply anywhere) "Buy the good stuff once, or the cheap stuff often". To me, that's what value is all about. So, with knives, I am always looking for a good deal, which has to balance out with other factors.

And that is how I came across this little knife made by Todd Kopp, a classic small dagger design based upon Bob Loveless' dagger design, which I love, (Gerber Guardians opened that door for me).

The pattern welded blade is very deeply etched, which for practical reasons doesn't make a lot of sense, but damn it looks good! It is accompanied by stainless guard and pins, and a stainless handle frame. Attached to it is mammoth ivory. Now, I have mixed feelings about that material, simply because there is no reason why mammoths shouldn't still be wandering around. Humans are responsible for their extinction, from what I've read, so owning a piece of that history physically causes some strange feelings. But hey, we all own our human history, right? But it's beautiful stuff and it feels like nothing else.

I hope you enjoy the pictures, and thank you Kevin Jones for hooking me up with such a great price and such an exceptional knife. I do believe you've finally converted me into a 'collector'!:D

Lorien that is one lovely piece!!!

I'm with ya on the quality/ value argument. I've gone comletely over to customs. This has been due to my disenchantment with the designs and materials used in most production knives. With customs I get better produced and designed knives which hold their value. Plus I get what I want instead of having to adapt my using preferences to someone elses design.

You are a lucky man
Todd makes a great blade and is a gentleman to boot. Have known him for a decade or better. His work just gets keeps getting better and more pricey!

Good job Kevin. Lorien, welcome to the world of backruptcy, heartache, and beauty.

Sometimes knife collecting gets wacky. My weekend is a good example. Long story..

Todd Kopp is a great guy and a very talented maker.

You have a beauty there!!

Beautiful knife. I am curious as to the measurements and would like to see the sheath if one was sold with it and you feel like posting it. :)

I must say though humans had far less to do with the extinction of mammoths than climate and disease did , maybe that knowledge will lessen your guilt over owning mammoth ivory. :)

Jon, that's awesome!:D We should have a chat over the phone one of these days, eh?

wildmike- I think a lot of guys who are into customs feel about the same way. I still like high quality production knives, too though.

You guys with your high opinion of Todd Kopp- I thank you for sharing your impression of him and his work. I haven't really heard of him before this knife, but his care and attention to detail speaks to his quality as a human being, among other things.

The overall length of the knife is about 9" and the steel is about 1/8" thick. The sheath is really well made and quite handsome, I'll post up some more pics next week. It has ostrich leather on the front face, and I had it on my belt for a whole day and forgot that it was there. This thin and light knife carries very nicely.

As for mammoths, I guess their fate is really anyone's guess, but a popular theory I've heard which makes some sense to me is that, because humans and mammoths existed concurrently, that the animal was partly hunted to extinction. Judging by the way our species operates, I think it's a highly credible argument. Who knows?

But, I'm super stoked on this knife and am glad to own it, partly because of that handle material which is just too amazing really not to like:)

Thank you all for your encouraging words!

thanks again Kevin, and thank you Stabber!
Kevin, you must be super stoked at how well the show played out. Some great new members gained as well:thumbup::cool:for the mighty CKCA!

Great Score. I have a Kopp Ring Fighter that I love and after I brought it I wanted to know more about the man and his work so a couple of emails and phone chats with Todd left me feeling even more that I was Extemely lucky on my score. One of the Nicest Guys out there.

cool, maybe I'll give him a shout. I like getting to know knife makers.
Thanks for the suggestion:thumbup:

Yes, very pleased Lorien. Between a very successful banquet/mini knife show, many new member sign-ups and some other very positive things in the works it was a great show.

Todd is a very talented knifemaker and a good guy. Though not an everyday name he has a very impressive list of show awards in his career.

We've got to get you to Blade Show.

sorry about the not so great pics, my ole 2meg camera has no macro setting:(
Up close and personal, it is a very nicely made sheath, as nicely made and finished as the knife, and I really like that. Seeing an amazing knife in a poorly constructed and/or designed sheath is a real downer to me.

Kevin, I'm flattered by what you said, thanks for that:)
I'd like to bring my wife to the show next year, I think she'd enjoy it too. We'll start saving! (no new orders for me for another year...well, there's a couple in the hopper, but after that no new orders...:D We'll see how that goes:rolleyes:)

thank you, Eli. I'm glad too:)
