I'm having a problem training with my Koppo stick that I was hoping someone could help me with. When I hold the stick and stike, the keys come back and "bite" my hand. The harder the strike the more painful the repurcussion. I had James make me a large Koppo stick that is 8" long and still the keys hit my hand. Any suggesstions? Thanks for your help.

I would expect on the street, you might cut your knuckles a tad bit hitting someone full force. It's not even going to be noticed. It's not something where you are going to say to yourself, "Wow! This sucks and it hurts..." And impede you. That's why I think in various texts regarding using Kubotans as "flails" with the keys to hands and wrists...it's a joke. The eyes are the only viable targets for that sort of thing.

[I'm trying to assure you, this is not going to effect you or anyone else when it counts...]

Now, on the subject of training, I know, it can be and is a pain to say the least. I would suggest taking the keys off for the vast majority of your training. Very simple.

Hi CBGOLD,

I have the standard 5.5" koppo, which I carry daily. I found that replacing the small keyring it came with, with a 1.5" diameter split ring, allows me to hold the koppo with my ring and middle fingers thru the loop, and the keys to fold back along the stick and rest secured under my thumb. I only do this while training to avoid potential damage to my keys (bending) - but it is quite comfortable even with full power blows to sections of tree trunks.

Like Don says, when push comes to shove you let the keys hit you and you won't even notice it. I've tried it that way a few times too - and it's no problem.

I agree with your opinion on flailing with a keychain stick, Don. All of the instructors that I have studied Kubotan under taught us to use the flail to the eyes/face as a set-up for a strike to the shoulder/collarbone area - a horizontal flail to the eyes and then immediately WHAM a hammer strike downward.

Very effective.

I never could understand why Tak Kubota recommended key flail strikes to the wrist and other areas. If the person is really an attacker and you are legally justified in hitting them to begin with, why on Earth would you hit them in a way that will not accomplish anything except escalate the situation? They're going to get pissed if you do this.

I never understood this and never will, it's as if it was filler material in a book to make it longer and more palatable to more genteel souls out in the world.

If the attacker has already stepped over a line and you are legally justified in striking them, I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to do something that will simply anger them. It's not like they are going to "respect" or fear you because you had the stones to smack their wrist or hand with a set of keys...I don't know...it's just trash as far as I'm concerned.

The eyes, they are so sensitive, altogether different mindset. But like you said, that should be a segue into something more damaging.

.....has the keyring taken off.
I did run some Paracord thru it though.
I like mine better w/out the keyring.

My keys have an ASP Defender on them along with some Paracord for flailing means.

I love my Koppo. When I carry it, I just slide it down almost IWB appendix position. I typically carry my ASP/keys combo like this on the left side.

Whatever works for you as long as it is tactically viable.
