Do any of you HI historians know if HI has ever produced a Kora sword? Those disc shaped guards look they would be a real pain in the wrist to manuver around.

I don't know if they have but if they do, I'm sure it'll be terrifying.... ly awesome:D:thumbup:

I'm not an expert. However I do know that some fighting styles demanded a lot of wrist-action where-as others stressed a rigid wrist and a hammer-grip... also have you ever handled a Kora? I haven't, but I have handled a Moro kris, and the tall, sharp protrusion of the ganya actually isn't a big deal unless you decide to choke up on the handle and purposely poke yourself with it.

Perhaps it is a matter of both proper technique and familiarity?

I recall someone on here posted a pic of the old paper Himalayan Imports catalog from the old days and there was a Kora in it.

Not all Kora had the discs on the hilt. Some were rather plain or had sort-of marmaluke style hilts.

Yes, one has been made

Here's a scan of the early catalog.

I'm loving the Nepali Tarwar / Dha hybrid ...please bring back an exact copy!

Pretty Please? ;)

I like 'em all! ...but the price IS steep...
the ram dao is similar to the ayda-katti, moplah "knife", and aruvaal of South India... which are definitely more weapon/machetes than a temple sword... the possibilities are amazing...

Yeah and that ad was from what? the 80's so imagine what they would cost now!

Considering that that brochure is from a time when ovehead for H.I. was higher and the fact that prices have actually come down on almost all their product since then ( a tarwar sells at the store for $225, http://yhst-7333098713883.stores.yahoo.net/tarwar.html) It's hard to say what they would cost, made in that style, without consulting Yangdu. I imagine it would be reasonable in price though.

Hey, I remember that photo from way back when! Cool stuff. Re: price, hasn't HI prices dropped for some items from the early days to now? So maybe IF these pieces were to make a comeback they MAY not be priced the same as shown here??? Feelin' hopeful :)

One of my dad's old Gurkha unit used to use a similar kora for the Dashera maar (buffalo sacrifice), while another unit he was in used the huge jaanwar-katne khukuri. Have to find those old photos somewhere.

I remember asking Uncle Bill about the Kora back in the xeroxed catalog days, and his response was something like "they're generally not very well-made". At least him bein' upfront took precedence over makin' a sale. :D

I'm really digging that Ram Dao.

Ditto to both of these!

Amen. Off course, the kamis complained that to be true of many Hasiya sickles that they saw, and they were more than happy to raise THAT bar! I'm sure they could make a very worthwhile kora, and that's one tool that virtually belongs alongside the khukuri.
