I often wondered if things like this have any relation to each other?
Of course the North Koreans claim to have set off a 'successful' under ground
nuclear bomb, others don't quite believe it and then today an earthquake about
6.5 hits the Hawaiian islands, they say no sizeable waves will be a result of
it, just local large waves around the islands.

See report Here
Anyone else wonder about such things?

Quakes also were near Japan yesterday, and I had the same thought. Could it have been triggered by North Korea's test.

I'd have to say that it's rather unlikely that the tests had anything to do with the quakes.

Japan is hanging out on the boundry of several tectonic plates. It's not unusual for it to have lots of earthquakes. It shares one of these with Korea. Korea is probably too far from the boundry to cause an earthquake.

Hawaii is right in the middle of the Pacific tectonic plate, so any sort of earthquakes it experienced were probably related to volcanic activity.

Figured it may be far fetched but such a coincidence, beneath the surface
things do travel, quickly, so it was just a thought...

Nah, it was just that butterfly I killed the other day. Sorry 'bout that.

Ah yes, forgot about that effect ;)

A quake just south of Sherwood, Oregon Thursday evening.

It wasn't major, 2.8. But I sure felt it.

They said that Hawaii is still having after shocks right now.
I use to live on Ohau back in the 60's my dad was stationed there
lived for 3 years, beautiful island! but, after 3 years, enough was
enough, though I'm sure it's changed a TON since then! :)

Maybe one of Hawaii's Volcanos is getting ready to unload some lava ?

I too thought about if underground tests can make things like earthquakes happen.... hmm , we need us a scientist.

Though , I am hoping something like this comes along and teaches Lil' Kimmy a lesson.

I thought it was that new blonde I was with.

And there I was thinking Plate Teutonics was the German version of a Greek wedding. (Germans throwing plates)

Mondays........................................................................................................................................................................back to the grindstone

There is a way they can run a test on this theory! Drop a nuke on NK and see if Japan and or Hawaii have any quakes within a week. If they do, that settles it!

Highly unlikely the miserably small nuke detonated by the North Koreans had any effect on Hawaii or even Japan. The energy released was just too small and at far too shallow a depth.

Of course, the truth is we don't know enough about the detailed substructure of the earth to be absolutely sure. All I can say is the odds are overwhelmingly against it. My own mind is 'at ease' on this subject.

Oddly enough, I was in Hawaii just before the earthquake. And several of the folks I met on the Big Island actually mentioned they were overdue for a couple of things: a good quake and maybe a tsunami. Guess they got part of their wish...

From your friendly neighborhood scientist (albeit not a geologist or vulcanologist).

Thanks OP, I'll alsosleep a bit easier tonight :)
