KPH/Sarge Knives and Puukkos...

Sylvrfalcn's great post on the KJM-1, which pointed to the KPH/Sarge knife, got me wondering if the KPH/Sarge was still available, or was it a one time run?

Also, is there any chance that there will be future runs of JKM-1's with longer blandes/handles?

Between the JKM's and KPH/Sarge knives, most, if not all of my small knife needs would be met...

Oh, as far as a larger Puukko, a five inch blade would be nice, if mated with a four inch handle...

What do you all think of a larger JKM, or Puukko?

Thanks,

Carter

Carter, the longer JKM-1 your looking for is basically the Kumar Karda. While not slab tanged like the JKM, it is usually full tang with a longer handle and blade. They show up on DOTD often. I know a lot of people love them. i don't own one, but i plan on getting one for my wife for the kitchen.
The KPH/Sarge knives trickle in from time to time. I would like to get another one when they show up again. I have one from the second run. it is hand's down the most used knife I own...period. I carry it as sure as i carry my wallet and keys. You might ask Yangdu if she has any in stock.

Hope this helps

Give the Kumar Karda a hard look. Great knife for all around duty. It replaced my old trusty Camillus Marine Combat model.

Gentlemen,

Thank-you for the rapid response, and the head's up on the Kumar Karda... I'll PM Mrs. Martino ASAP. Kumar made my Chitlangi and JKM-1. Superb work...

Your reccomendation, and his superb craftsmanship, have really helped...

Again, Thanks...

I'm also very interested in picking up a Sarge knife one day, preferably a villager with a longer full tang wooden or elk handle. Not having seen one in person though, I just wondered if the thickness of these is as great as that of the Karda. I have one of those, and while I find it a work of art in every other respect, I do think the blade thickness is too great for a knife whose size and design seem to lend itself to slicing rather than chopping (or prying for that matter). I think a knife of similar size and quality, and about half the thickness of blade, would be more useful. Does HI make any "thinner" blades?

I actually don't have a way to measure my KPH right now, but it is thinner than say a JKM. The Sarge/KPH was designed to be a knife for the person that knows how to use a knife. You could use the Sarge/KPH to pry in the sense that it will take the torque of digging and gouging and cutting around bone, but it would probably fail trying to pry a door open. It's thin enough to be a wicked slicer, but strong enough to abuse to some degree. I have never seen a full tang version of the Sarge/KPH as the original was not make in that way. I have no doubt that the handle will stay put forever. You would have to heat the blade to melt the laha, THEN (very quickly) yank the handle off. This is a very well built knife for what it is designed to do. Kismet knows a thing or two...if that was not already obvious;)

HI blades run thick, it has been debated a lot, do a search and you will get all kinds of reading material. If you give them a full convex grind, they will still slice well. Many of them are more or less sabre ground initially. The individual kamis can vary somewhat on the models too. Some do thicker blades than others, I lost track of who does what the best a long time ago. Even the individual kami can show a lot of variance, depending on steel supply and whatnot. If you want a thinner one, call Yangdu about the model you want. She will tell you what is in stock and give you a rundown of the variances between them. She may even be able to keep her eye out for one that falls in your spec range in you are really specific, that may not be an option, depending how busy things are and other variables.

Carter,
Sorry for the late chiming in. :o I am somewhat slow. I thought I would show you a picture of the JKM and Kumar Karda together, to give youa better picture in your minds eye.
BTW, it is good to see more Maniacs here! :D

The nice thing about most of the Kumar Karda's is that they're thick enough to do a full convex grind on without sacrificing any of the width while making them a bit thinner. :D

ArchAngel,

I really enjoyed your photo... Just reinforces what I did in ordering the Kumar Karda (Big Puukko) early, early this AM... I like the little JKM-1 so much, I almost ordered a second one... I think they'd make great gifts, come to think of it... Anyway, I'm glad I ordered the Big One to go with the Little One... Adds balance to my collection...

Have a great weekend, and thanks for sharing your fine blades... BTW, that scabbard and lanyard for your Big Puukko is very nicely done... Your work, or did you hire out?

Take care, have fun, and stay safe...

Carter

Hi Steve,

Beautiful knives, and a very nice collection...

I'm sold on them... I've got a JKM-1 and a Kumar Karda on order... I didn't know that there was such a wide selection! A Baby Chitlangi! I'll have to talk to Mrs. Martino about keeping an eye out for me...

I haven't had so much fun "collecting" anything, outside of books, in many years... The Khukuri definitely is a potent "disease..." HIKV really does exist...

Again, Thanks, Steve. You've really got me looking forward to having two collections, or rather, a more widespread one...

Take care, stay safe, and have a fun weekend...

Carter
