Krein Regrind Spyderco Police 3

I got a Spyderco Police 3 and did not like the drop point. The edge also was a little thick at .025", so I had it reground to a nice .010" thick edge with the spine flattened out for better piercing performance. This knife is just sick for tip sharpness, it makes my Millie seem thick at the tip. The thin edge is also great, and on a knife of this magnitude (4 3/8" blade) it is amazing. This thing can really cut stuff up, and there is so much edge to use! I am extremely happy with how this one turned out. Sorry about the terrible cell phone pics, but I still can't find my camera after moving.

Edit, found my camera for a little better pics

Nice! I've got a couple that need to go to Tom, I've got to get going on them!

I waved one of those a while back. Reese Weiland has it now and is sharpening the back and drilling a lanyard hole.

I love this Police 3, but my absolute favorite regrind is my Caly Jr ZDP with a .005" edge. That redefines cutting ability! I dropped that knife out of my pocket accidentally on tile and it took off a tiny bit of tip, so I sent it in and Tom fixed the tip and put his logo on it as well for me. That knife really makes me want to send my Caly 3 ZDP in along with my Endura Wave SE for a regrind to proper thickness. When your 4 3/8" blade has a slightly thinner edge than your Caly 3 ZDP and it's 3" blade it makes the Caly 3 seem tubby. It is amazing what Tom can do with blades to really show you what real cutting ability is. I also got a new custom from Krein, a Hydra. It is a deep hollow ground slicer with a short enough blade to not scare away too many sheeple. The fit and finish and blue/black G-10 on that knife are great. My other Krein custom, the Ultimate Caper in M4 might be my favorite knife ever due to it's thinness and M4's ability to take and hold a really sharp edge make the knife hard to beat. It is an amazing slicer and just a work of art with it's full height hollow grind and nice lines. Tom manages to make knives that are pure cutters that just look great and his attention to detail is amazing. The handles and pins and everything about the knives are great, and you just get a lot of joy from using such well made cutlery.

Do you have any pics of that ultimate caper? I went to his website, and the knives pictured aren't captioned, some of it is still under construction.

Thanks!

I'll try to post them later. I found my camera, but not the dock, but I should be able to post much better pictures. Worst case I can email the pics, but I'll try to show off all of the knives I got back yesterday.

Here are a couple pics. Top is the Hydra, bottom is the Ultimate Caper:

The Police 3 cuts way better than a knife this large should, and I just love it. It is funny comparing it side by side with my Caly 3 ZDP with it's thin factory edge that is fatter than the Police is now. The Caly Jr and it's crazy cutting power are so much fun it isn't fair to what I cut. Going through boxes, plastics, and whatever else I can find is just crazy, especially when you use just the ultra thin tip. My Caly 3 ZDP is going to have to go in for a regrind to .005" to make it's refined greatness cut as good as my Caly Jr. I didn't get to carry the customs today due to rain, but when it is dry I will lop up lots of boxes to break in my Hydra. Tom Krein put an ultra acute angle on the bevel, and I can't wait to see what a thin edged CPM D2 slicer at 61RC can do. Oh, the joy!

Looks sweet.

Good job to both Tom and you.

It's always intresting to see how our afi customers modify our knives to suit their individual preferences. A pleasure and a good lesson for us in understanding our customers.

Thanks, Sal. I like very thin and pointy knives that are very reliable and ergonomic. I have found Spyderco to come with the closest knives to my likes, though no sane manufacturer would make their knives as thin as I like them. Luckily Tom Krein can regrind knives exactly how I like them. I must say though, my Manix, Military, and especially the Superhawk needed no work to improve on their factory performance in my mind aside from a thinner backbevel. The Superhawk is the most ergonomic knife I have ever used, and the compression lock, wire clip, and great carbon fiber make the Superhawk one of the greatest folders ever in my opinion. Nothing can touch it ergo wise, and it is a great cutter. For some reason though I just can't stop myself from sending Tom Krein more Spydercos to regrind. We'll see how others like three of my regrinds in the passaround I have going now, or if I'm just a kooky darksider that likes his edges too thin. Thanks for paying attention to us ELU's Sal, we appreciate a company that respects and reacts to it's customers.

Ditto! Spyderco is a very unusual company in this respect, and that's a compliment! Kind of like separating the wheat from the chaff, so to speak... ;)

In a little bit, I should be getting my G10 Police back from Reese Weiland. I did the wave mod. He is putting a double edge and a lanyard hole. When closed, the blade will be completely covered in the handle. Will post pics.

Mike, THANKS! Glad you like them.

I use a Dozier Grinder with fresh belts for my regrinds.... that and lots of dunks in the water bucket!

Tom
And about 30 or 40 years of experience probably. Here is a comparison:

Stock on top, my regrind in the middle, Kreinage on the bottom. My dear wife looks at my attempt and asked if an angry beaver got ahold of it. Very funny. It might be ugly, but it works pretty good. But the one on the bottom works better. I leave the stock one for cutting through tanks and breaking up cinder blocks. ;)

Move along Sal, nothing to see here.... :D

Tom, THANK YOU! This Police turned out EXACTLY like I envisioned it. I trust that I can describe what I want and I will recieve exactly what I asked for on your regrinds. Even with the dunks in water I find it amazing not one of my heat treatments has been adversely effected even on the .004"-.005" grinds. That thin the steel must get super hot instantly, and you manage it perfectly. All hail the Arkansas Grind Monkey!

I have a Caly 3 ZDP that needs a flat ground .004"-.005" edge and a serrated edge Endura Wave that needs a flat grind as well. I'll mail them out soon, and you can sit on them until after the craziness of Blade. Your folders (I need one!) and customs are the real priority, not some of my regrinds.

Oh yeah, I LOVE the Hydra. I got to carry it and slice some boxes up real nicely with it. That handle not only feels great but POPS with the Blue/Black G-10, and that blade is a born slicer. It will be my skinner for a long time. It is a pleasure to use your knives and your prices are amazing for such a great quality product. You just can't put a price on the fun it is to pull out a beautifully crafted knife, cut stuff up with it, and still have it's 120 grit Kreinedge shaving like a champ. Here's to 61 RC CPM D2 in the cutting machine named the Hydra!

Thanks again Tom for being so talented, but above all just a great guy that treats his customers like they are all long time friends. I don't know how you manage to grind so much while taking time to answer every question, no matter how stupid, without rushing us off the phone, all the while you've got orders to fill and blades to make for Blade Show. I can't wait to see what your folders final form is going to be. I'm sure it will be bad ass!
