I just finished up a Lahar project for a forum member. The handle scales are curly black mesquite. Tom Krein re-ground the blade and it's impressively sharp.

Very nice, Phillip:thumbup: It may be the mesquite as opposed to other woods you've used, but I really like the glossier finish that your scales usually have. The mesquite is very nice, but your RAM and ZT scales just "pop" a bit more.

Please don't take this as a negative review, because I always enjoy seeing your work. This one just didn't do it for me to the same extent. Of course, you said it was a specific order, so I'm sure the member who's receiving it will be extremely pleased as the fit and finish looks impeccable!

Jon, those were my thoughts, too. Very simple and unembellished scales with the usual impeccable fit and finish. Not as flashy as some of the other scales you've produced Phillip, but quality work nonetheless.

It is definitely more subdued than most of the ones I've made. I thought I'd experiment. I think it'll be good to tame the ZT 0200 scales I'm making him.

I'd say these scales look more like "wood". They're also pretty light while still being strong and stable.

Phillip,

Plain scales like these seem like they could use some checkering. Is that something that you've ever tried?

HOLY CRAP.

That thing looks sooooooooo sharp. Wow. Nice looking knife but damn. That blade looks unbelievably sharp. Jeeez.

Gah, I LOVE that. The wood looks just like wood on that one. If I could afford a Lahar, I think I might try to afford one like that! Beautiful stuff. Modding is one step closer to true knife insanity. I think I should wait to go there.

Before I opened this thread, I was not a fan of wood handled knives..........I AM NOW!
Very nice work!

I gotta say I kinda agree with PG on this one. Maybe even something as subtle as an exterior radius?

In any case, nice work there Phillip!!!

I was thinking of something like this Hogue pistol grip or a S&W pistol grip.

I've tried checkering by hand years ago and it was a challenge to make something that didn't look terrible. A radius or bead might be good too and much easier.

BTW, thanks TW.

Those scales look great man!! And that Krein regrind just looks plain scary!

might have to send mine to Tom after seeing this!!
