The book "swish of the kris" is partly available for download at www.bakbakan.com
Its the best book of its kind as it tells the story of the black nomatic tribes who came from a different world. The filipino warriors from the southern philipines have no spanish influence. They have never been qonquered by the spanish in sulu.
Modern Arnis and eskrima are not kali. kali is the bladed art from mindinao. The art is based on the blade and the motions are from sinawali. The Empty hands come from the translations of the blade, and are not at all like the popular wing chung that dan teaches.
Most people in the us who claim to practice or even teach this art have not seen it done correctly. Cecil from kris cutlery has a nice documentary out called "crossing the sulu seas" On the tape you can see a muslim wedding as well as a kris maker, and some people doing silat kuntao with a barong, and spear. They also have an interesting section on the magic (ilmu) from west java.
go slow at first.
examine what it is that you are doing.
by blending your sinawali with your footwork
it becomes "the dance of life"

Paul, I agree that Modern Arnis is completely different method than that of Eskrima, Kali and other forms of Blade Weapons arts.

In PI they have the so called "Arnis de Mano", Singko Tero, and Payong. If we look at the wordings "de mano and Singko, has a spanish influence. The word Payong is purely Filipino word, which means Umbrella, they used the stick or bolo in a continuous movement hovering above the head as a protection of an incoming strikes.

The Moros in the south has really their own way of using their kris purely different to the Arnis forms.

Note to remember: Early conflicts between the Filipinos (Moros) in the south and Spanish Conquistadores have their own pure distinct sword or kris/bolo fighting techniques used.
