KSF Pocono Pocket Sheath MOD

I modded the KSF Pocono Sheath by chopping off the supplementary item section and adding a pocket clip. The Original Pocono was just too large for me and wasted space in my pocket. I also prefer to carry my flashlight, the Maratac AAA, loose in my front right pocket. Pocket sheaths without clips also annoy me because they tend to sag down while in your pocket, forcing one to have to dig in their pockets for their fixed blade. I carry my Bark River PSK Elmax in the sheath. It rides very comfortably in my right front pocket with my phone and flashlight now. I'm very pleased :)

This isn't the exact mod everyone has to do but it is a concept i wanted to share with everyone. Pocket fixed blade CLIP sheaths are difficult to come by these days, so why not make your own? Just convert your old leather sheath into one. The modded sheath is slimmer, lighter, more accessible, more secure. Maybe Bark River would like to make a pocono clip version too! *EHEM*EHEM*

Enjoy! Vit
P.S. Please let me know if the background annoys you to death. I can switch backgrounds if enough people hate it.

Here is the original pocono:

The Tec P7. What a GREAT idea.

What adhesive, my good man, did you use to secure the P7 to the leather?

I think you could back those last two stitches out and cut that curve just right at the tip, then re-tie the stitching to give it a nice curve to the blade. Then again, that flat bottom probably rides really nice in the pocket. Just a thought.

Very nice.

Thanks, Halestorm! Here's the best part: It isn't a >$10 TEC P7 Clip!!! It's a $7 Ksi Clip which is a copy of the P7. You can get them off ebay. I saved a few bucks, haha no big deal. Another candidate for a clip is the Nite-Ize self-locking clip, in case anyone else wants to look into options.

I used a simple DEVCON 5 minute two-part epoxy. Do you know any alternatives to epoxy for a leather-metal interface? I've considered the curve you're suggesting and it really isn't a bad idea. I'm really just hesitating because im not sure of my skill in refinishing the stitching. The sheath is definitely ready for that cut if i ever choose to do it! Thank you! I know you do more kydex work but i hope this at least sparked some other cool project for you :)

Nicely done modification!

Not trying to derail the thread but, I have a question

Can the Pocono hold a Closed Buck 112?, I've been thinking of carry options I have a Swiss Champ on my belt
and, I don't want it to get pocket worn so quickly with my keychains. I'd like it to have a dedicated pocket
with my soon to arrive Buck 112 and a Thrunite TI.

I'm actually not sure about the Buck 112. One thing to be concerned about is the Thrunite TI fitting in the extra compartment. Before i modded the sheath, i tried putting my maratac AAA in the sheath and i never really got it to slide in. Granted, the sheath can probably break in and stretch to accomodate a flashlight but i just want to warn you about it.

Good to see some modding in this forum! Well done and I look forward to any more you do in the future. :D

Thank you for the tip, neatsfoot oil will help soften the leather I'll try it out when I can !

interesting idea, i like it. did you seal/finish the newly created edge in any way?

yes but very crudely. i rubbed some paraffin wax all along the edge and slicked it using a block of scrap high density polyethylene. it's really nothing fancy but it at least darkened the color and eliminated that raw "hairy" leather finish of my cut. it also effectively acts as water repellent.

I've worked with leather twice and it is definitely a very tough skill to learn. I'm embarrassed to post the pics of my two sheaths or I'd show you what I've done so far.

On the stitching, especially since the holes are already there, it would be the easiest thing to try and if you screw up, then just restitch the whole sheath. The materials to just restitch are really inexpensive and easy to find. Two needles and some thread. Go for it!

Psyching myself up for it right now. It'll happen!

Nice job. For what are you using the "Cut Off" piece for?

Nothing, really. I never liked how small it was, either. Like i said above, i even had trouble getting a maratac AAA flashlight in. If an item that small is all it can hold, i'd rather keep that item in my pocket by itself :)

Since you're going to go for it, I'll post my first and second attempts. Go ahead and laugh. I did. :D

My first attempt. Left side carry for outings around the camp. Normally a gun or large fixed blade on my right hip. Ugly as can be but functional. You can tell by the scuffs, I use it and abuse it and I'm pretty rough on my gear.

Made this before I had the Tec P7. Now the P7 stays on and works as a small lanyard to draw the knife and I can easily switch to pocket carry or the sheath.

2nd attempt. Hatchet loop. Just like a hammer loop but to hold my hatchet when I'm clearing brush and need a second hand. No need to lay it on the ground. Ugly, but functional like the first one.

Hey, functional work is nothing to laugh about! I know exactly how it feels to make something to fulfill a purpose but does not look so pretty. I'm still impressed and i'm sure they serve you just fine. Good news: I cut the sheath and it turned out great! Unfortunately, i have no time to upload photos at the moment but will return with the photos on Sunday! All my worries were for nothing though. The result was problem-free.

I burnt the thread with a lighter after cutting. It turned out nice. The sheath is not immaculate in the finishing department but it does its job even better now. Taking off that corner lets it fit in the pocket better now, especially in jeans that have shallow sides.

Nice work!!!!

Looking good.
If you want to take it a step up, for the edge, sandpaper with sanding block will come in handy...
