I want to recommend the leather strop kit from KSF to the RAT Pack. I recently picked one up and it's really nice, and it works well. It's definitely more effective than stropping with an old leather belt. The strop compliments the sharpmaker quite well and it'll get your knife even sharper after you're done on the sharpmaker. Well I just wanted to get the 411 out there to ya peeps.

Check it out.

sounds good. I've been thinking about getting a strop and I think you just pushed me over the edge :P

is stropping any good for a normal 20 degree "non-convex" edge or it just for the convex edges? stupid question but that's how you learn :P

I don't use a strop (will probably pick one up in a few months), but if AK says that it compliments the Sharpmaker, unconvexed edges should work great with them.

Stropping works with non-convexed grinds, just gotta make sure the edge is touching the strop.

i got a few of these... there nice and light ... i have used em on axes , and machettes , i have some other bats and stuff and these are my first step for any thing larger then 5 inchs.... i picked up 2 of the strops , theres 3 compounds and 1 plain works great for polishing that final edge.... works great barkie came out with a good set up for a pretty cheap cost.

if you want the nicest strop you can buy get one from Mr2Blue here on the forums--i have two of his custom strops in some beautiful woods and i picked up me some green 0.5 micron compound and i'm good to go--with his strops you get a awsome edge and do it in style--lol--:D

Make your own if you have the materials on hand

I'm very interested in picking this exact honing kit.

Aknife, do you find that stropping non-convex knives removes the bevel at all? I'm worried that I may do that to my Spydies because I've never stropped before (just used the Sharpmaker).

The strop is awesome and it works wonder with your edge.

D1omedes,
The compound wound not remove the bevel for non-convex edge. Either the black or the green compound is too fine to remove serious amount of metal to screw up, unless maybe you kept stropping the bevel all day.
What the compound does is to polish the very edge of the blade to remove any micro-serration or "teeth" because the teeth is actually micro-fractures/chips, weak point that causes the edge to chip. also, the stropping pressure is a very important factor too.

Big fan of the KSF strop + green/black compound as well - it puts a great finish to all my RCs after a good workout on the sharpmaker.

Since I try to strop after every use, I seldom even use the sharpmaker as the strop keeps the blade in shape.

 Yep, if you do more passes with less pressure (usually the weight of the blade) you should be in the clear. Also make sure you have your edge angle correct or you could start to mess up your edge and dull it. D1omedes I'd recommend practicing on some cheaper knives if you've never stropped before, once you get the hang of it you can feel when the edge is correct.

Hey guys, I'm a newbie so please pardon this question - what does stropping do that sharpening doesn't? I have an RC-4 and I'm able to get it back to hair shaving sharp on my Lansky crock stick system, which kinda surprised me actually - I was afraid of dulling the blade since I'm new to this stuff. Does stropping make the knife even sharper?

Thanks,
Doug

From my experience I can get my knives sharper from stropping. Stropping polishes up the edge, it removes some remaining metal particles left after sharpening and imo helps make the edge last longer between touch ups than if it weren't stropped.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll definitely try stropping with my SAK and Persistence before my Delica 4 or Salt 1. I was just wondering if you had experienced any difficulty when you first started stropping beveled edges. Everyone says stropping is easy but it looks kind of difficult to me.

How long will that leather strop last? Once I apply compound to the surface, do I need to add more each time I strop?
