Hello,

Living in the sunshine state has it's ups  and downs :barf: . As far as owning too many knives goes, the down of the situation is keeping them from rusting. I've never stored a knife in it's sheath unless that sheath was a plastic one. But I've never owned a wooden one. Should I store the knives in or out of the sheaths?

If the wood is leather-covered, the leather typically touches the blade near where it enters the sheath. Many older Khukuris have a rust line that matches that contact. I'd store them out of the sheath. You might alos check out the thread "Khukuri Use."

Sam:

I'm storing mine in the scabbards for a couple reasons. First, the blade is less likely to hurt somebody and second, if I store them separately I may lose the scabbard (Murphy will run off with it). If rust ever develops, I'll deal with it, but so far - no rust.

Cliff, our newspaper comes in a plastic bag every day (wet here too). The sheath goes in one bag, the knife in another, and both in a third. (Did you know that the Murphy's were known as optimists in the Old Country?)

get yourself some breakfree clp. i've had great results with it.

One of many options is to:

clean khuk
---My current preference is for SoftScrub Orange;
----I don't know if it has any significant amount of limonene
---Make your own similar by mixing citrus solvent (GooGone Pro)
----or any cleanser with mostly citrus/limonene with a mild
----abrasive like calcium carbonate, baking soda, or similar.
-----Both BonAmi & SoftScrub are calcium carbonate.
-----If the citrus cleanser makes a persistant foam when you shake the
------bottle then it has surfactants & water in addition to limonene.

dry khuk
---air dry overnight, or fan dry, or oven dry after warming
----on Minimum temp first, then turn Off oven and place khuk in.
----OR; wipe down 90+% alcohol, then acetone/nail polish remover.

wax khuk
---Rennaissance Wax is used by museums & considered archival quality.
----Its a microcrystaline wax suspended in a volitile petroleum base.
-----Last time I had it out I thought it smelled like kerosene.
---Any wipeable wax should work on a user khuk,
----longterm storage requires the most care of course.

sheath khuk
---Make sure sheath is dry, & has no debris or anything absorbed
----that might promote rust.
