about and hour and a half ago I upacked my rotary platen from Beaumontmetalworks. The largest of the few flat ground blades I had perviously done was about 4-5 inches. I tried an 8-1/2" blade with a slight upsweep for my first try . I was worried I was being too ambitious, but I have to say the the rotary platen tracks so steady, that it made it possible for me to do as good a job as I have ever done. The grinds and plunges are even and the edge is straight as an arrow - this is a great attachment!!!

what is the purpose of a rotary platen?

does it take the place of a regular platen?

is it used for flat grinding?

seriously, they look nice, but i have no idea of their benefit.

thanks

Skaer...its used for flat & convex grinding. It's another tool and does not entirely take the place of a flat platen. It has 4 diffrent positions that can be used - ranging form flat to full convex grind. I profile and taper tangs on my flat platten. IMHO, the rotary platen gives the greatest amount of control you can get in flat grinding.

I demo'd both flat platen and rotary platen side by side and the difference was very apparent. Many are now in circulation and I am sure we'll be hearing about more uses.

From the first pic Rob posted here I knew I had one in my life. When I got it I was in hog heaven, though it took me a bit longer to figure out what I was gonna do with it than it did Roger!

Roger, that's a beautiful blade. Can't wait to see that baby topped off. You'll be working all weekend I trust?

:D

Hey Dave - your right, I made it out of O-1 so I could HT it myself and see the results sooner!

Bob,

After opening the box, it doesn't sound like the packing peanuts had time to hit the floor before you had the attachment in your machine and grinding. :D

The blade looks great! I can't wait to see the final product!

Thank you for the kind words and I truly hope that you enjoy the attachment.

Sincerely,
Rob
