I have a well-made khukuri from another manufacturer. The flared butt is very uncomfortable when the khukuri is used. I am looking for a practical/usable khukruri. How does the 15"Ang Khola compare? What about the WWII or British Army model? This is a great forum-I have been lurking here for a long time.
Thanks.

i would say so you've been lurking for a while, you've been a registered member for almost 8 years!

you can file down the flare, most people are afraid to mod their knives but there really isn't any reason not to, i.e, some people sand off the rings off their handles.

Generally, you can expect HI handles to get larger as you go up in size. I have personally found HI's handles good. You can email Yangdu and give your preferences, i.e fatter handle, longer handle, she may be able to accomondate.

Regardless, feel free to re shape your handle.

What size of handle do you prefer? long, short, fat, skinny, oval, round etc...

let us know.

I'd say you have a penchant for understatement. :D

Take a belt sander to that flaired tip. If it's a horn handle, wear a respirator. You can mold it to suit you.

Case in point...

ahhh... Perfect!
THAT's what i need to do to the sharp diamond shape on my 15" BAS.. it tends to rub bottom of my palm while chopping/swinging.
Guyon, when you did that.. did you encounter any hollow parts underneath buttcap which required filling?

Thanks for sharing that buttcap pic :)

No hollow parts on that one. It's a WWII Villager. I just flipped my belt sander upside down, locked the trigger to "on," and then gradually took off wood and metal till I was happy. Hand sand and tung oil after that.

What they said.

Khuks is made to be used.

Belt-Sand the sucker. File it while watching TV. Round it off on the way to work. YOU'RE in charge. :)

No hollow parts to worry you. Brass may have rough edges, file them too.

As for HI AK in 15 inch? My favorite utility khuk. Best compromise in my opinion.

Have fun.

Wow! Since 1999! Time does fly. I lost my password and had a hard time getting back in when they revamped the site. Thanks for the advice-I think I will try to sand the sharp edges.

Dave61,
err.. you'll need more than Sandpaper!
even File was slow going!
that little brass Buttcap is a tough little bugger!
ended up using my dremel with a grinding stone.. then sanding drum to shape wood.. then polishing wheel to smooth buttcap nicks.

now i'm doing the sanding w/ fine steel wool & Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil.. on coat #2 now.. wait a day to dry.. blah blah.

would throw up some 'work in progress' pics.. but damn digital camera was Busted by kids last week.. grr..

Anways.. g'luck on that!

No sir. New keeper was formed from brass, then primer flash hole was drilled out to be a press fit to tang protrusion. After keeper was put on to tang, the tang end was peened out to lock into place. I basicly used the traditional method.

Dave,

Is the handle on your current khuk too short? I've had most problems with smaller models, where my hand doesn't quite fit on the handle. If that's the case, a 16"+ AK should do well for you, unless you have humungous hands. Then step up to 18". It's a continuing battle, but nearly all of the standard HI models are sized well for American hands.

There's also no reason not to take off the butt flare on your current khuk. I did a less severe modification than some of the ones pictured using just a bastard file on a horn handle. Take off as much or as little material as you want until it fits your hand well - a true custom job. That's a good chunk of the HI khuk magic - people aren't afraid to tweak them until everything purrs. Good luck.

re: Handle Ring

1. Where do you guys put your fingers around Ring?

At first i put 2 fingers beneath ring, choking back for more leverage.. but pinky felt kinda cramped, and i actually felt More shock this way while chopping wood. Uses more of whole arm for chopping?

Then i put only Pinky beneath ring.. "felt" like i lost leverage since i choked up, but i feel less shock this way. Blade seems to "rotate" better for wrist chopping.

Just curious, for those that have Removed the handle Ring..
2. how does it feel now?
3. would you remove it again?

Tony?

You don't have to remove the ring, just 'splain the rules to it a little bit.:)

Take off the sharpness of the ring crest a bit. Try it. It does have a function of aiding in your grip.

Also, and you may have tried this...give yourself a chance to get used to the handle form. This is not an axe, so you don't need a rigid wrist. Wear a glove, and do some moderately extended chopping/lopping.

You may find that your arm will pivot at the shoulder, then the elbow and THEN the wrist, flicking down for that final bit of velocity. If you use your khuk this way, the ring helps to serve as a way to keep the khuk in hand, while still allowing you to "snap" the blade into the target wood.

Please read the safety thread.

Have fun.

As nearly perfect an explanation as I have seen.

Especially the safety part...

Its a 15" given to me when I left the Army(I can't remember the manufacturer)-normal sized handle for my normal size hands. It is well made-it just hurts because the flare on the butt digs in to the side of the hand when you swing it hard.

Thganks for all of the input.

Dave
