'kukri dance'

and in Bosnia:

bosnia.gif

Saturday 3rd May saw A (Gallipoli ) Coy 1 Highlanders conduct their first large-scale public relations event. In the picture the local children from Kotor Varos are given lessons in the 'Kukri Dance' by members of A Coy 1 Highlanders. The day was deemed a success and the aim is to continuously improve on the relationships throughout the tour of duty.

Imagine what kind of PR it would be to teach the 'kukri dance' to school children in the US!!!

I can't imagine them teaching that in US schools, tto bad it looks like more fun than square dancing.

The so called educators at most of the schools in the US would probably have a heart attack if you pulled out a khuk to use in a dance. I have other things that bug me on the zero tolerance thing too but I know there are some good teachers so, I'll shut this off right here.:)

I've said this before, but I'll say it again:

zero tolerance = zero decision making = zero responsibility = zero chance of making a wrong 'decision'

When I grew up, not so long ago, a job that met that description was a dead-end job that earned the lowest wages.

The last part of the equation should be:

= zero chance of a promotion = zero chance of earning more $ than a mindless automaton sorting recyclables or screening baggage.

How much do school administrators make?

Rant over for now.

"Back to that one room schoolhouse."

And every boy with a pocket knife, probably every girl too.

Still, there were problems in those times too, just ask Yvsa (not that thing are great now).

I never tought about this before reading your comment.......

Last year my daughter (8-yrs) took a 6-ft double-tipped spear
(not sharp) to her school for their 'talent-sharing' day.
Nary a complaint that I heard.
But then this was at a Montessouri school, which is maybe
more like a 'one-room' school than a traditional school.

I carried a pocketknife to school in the late 60's-early 70's.
Suburb of Louisville KY.
Originally my Cub Scout knife.
Wonder if I still have that somewhere?
Never thought about it one way or another.

I do recall a trip to North Carolina in the early 70's
where my Dad stopped to help some other tourists with a
broken hose on their engine.
He asked my mother to hand him a knife and she reached into
her purse to pull out a slim 6" folder.
(She used it to cut up apples when she stopped for lunch
as a schooolbus driver)
I remember the laugh Mom & Dad had when she told him how
the folks had looked so shocked at the sight of the knife.

Junior year I started carrying a stainless steel folder even though it was against the rules, I probably could have been suspended. Now they have metal detectors at the doors. sigh:(

I carried a knife throughout high school. Lil' Gerber EZ-Out. I still remember the time a teacher was having trouble opening a package, I offered her my knife.

"You know you aren't supposed to have those things in school!"

I shrugged, and watched her struggle for a bit longer before she finally said, "Gimmie the knife." :D

I never had half as much cause to use my knife as I did during my high school days. In a land where knives are few and far between, the usefulness of those few are vast.

I carried throughout school, up to and including a Buck GOliath folder for a while in high school(ok, a little overkill, but it cut).

Never had any teachers say anything, closest to mentioning it was against rules(it was, and I knew it) was theatre director saying "Joel, just don't use that until I have my back turned" IE if she deosn't see it, can't be responsible.

when i was in high school, i had a computer class with our assistant principal and she needed a mail filer or something sharp. so when she asked us "does anyone have a knife?" we all silently looked at each other and said nothing. (the location is brooklyn, ny year 1999) so then she says "i promise i wont susupend anyone" and we replied yeh right! "really i wont" so about 3/4ths of the class pulls out all sorts of blades... me included!

i was at albertsons a few years back, and a freind of mines little brother and his gang were lounging near the front of the store, in the parking lot

when one of the workers went on her cigarette, she looked through her purse and pockets for a minute or two, and finally gave up and walked over, and said

"i feel stupid asking this, but do any of you have a light?"

of the 9 kids there (12-13 years old) - 10 lighters came up....

it was pretty halarious...

i started carrying a leatherman wave junior year, nad have had it ever since - its basically been the only knife ive ever needed, and probably will continue to be.... not that that ever stops me from buying more knives...

My mother locked her self out of her car in a bad neighborhood at night. So she goes to the Dunkin Donuts at the end of the street, walks in and asks in a loud voice "does anyone know how to break into a car?".
Well a bunch of hands went up, one guy went back to her car with her. He took one look at the slide locks and told her to call AAA.
