Hi all. I want some ideas for a Kukri for my Bug out bag. It will be a 60/40 split on a Fighting weapon and a useful camp tool, A good balance between both will be necessary and i have about 3 pounds max to spare because i would prefer a Kukri over an ax or tomahawk and i have a very good saw for firewood. It must be robust and intimidating, wielded "somewhat easily" and built to be used in a desperate situation. I have plenty of Guns so no worries in that regard.. Also, i am not going to buy more then one regardless! Thanks Gang !! ;)

you keep telling yourself "just one" we see how long you last ! -- as always I suggest a Klvuk as the go-to khukuri utility knife; otherwise a nice ww2 or CAK (chiruwa ang khola) would be ideal-- I think an ax is still a good idea even with your khuk, ax is just a nice thing to have in your tool set.

I would suggest something in the middle of the pack between a chopper and fighter. An 18" BAS, WWII, or even a UBE (that'll be intimidating).

Since you say 60/40 split between weapon and camp tool, I'd recommend a WWII or M43. The AK/CAK model is more axe-like, but it's mainly a dedicated heavy chopper and that doesn't match the 60/40 split that you're wanting.

A 17" or 18" WWII will usually be under 2 lbs. An M43 in the same length will probably be under 2 lbs, but some of them run heavier, so you should inquire about the weight before deciding. Both models are robust and intimidating. Unless you're unusually strong it would probably be better to stay under 2 lbs if you want to be able to wield the khukuri "somewhat easily" in weapon mode or for extended chopping or long hikes. A few ounces make a big difference in the "feel" of these large knives.

If you buy a DOTD here on the forum, Yangdu always gives the weight of a knife as well as overall length. If you buy from the HI web site, be aware that there are variations in weight, since these knives are hand made using traditional tools. If you're in a hurry, best bet is to email Yangdu directly and ask what she might have available. The more information you can give her about your intended usage, and your strength and fitness level, the better she can serve you.

Good luck.

I will echo the sentiments on the WWII or the BAS. As they were and are respectively, used by the ghurkas for the sort of situations you are attempting to prep for.

the mighty M43 will sort you out no probs!

P.S good luck with the just the 1 I have heard that before, actually I think thats what i said in the beginning to!)

I said I only wanted 1....2 HI khukuris and 3 others later...

Gunna a have to go with the flow and say WWII, M43 or BAS.
