I picked up one of these low cost Kukris and wanted to ask if anyone knows anything about them, for the low cost I expect little.

Reviews seem very good, anyone have experience with this one?

This Kukri came unsharpened, very dull but appears to sharper near the handle and dullest at the chopping end. Before I spend the time sharping this I would like to know if anyone thinks, it is work taking the time to put an edge on it?

I have a Gatco sharpening kit, what angle edge should I ame for and should it be different at the chopping and cutting ends?

Grateful for all comments and suggestions

Don

With the utmost respect, I'd say that it isn't. It's a very poor kukri and any time spent trying to sharpen it would be time wasted. :o Many items like that one have a poor heat treatment on poor steel, if it even has a heat treatment at all. Maybe it might be worth filing a super coarse edge onto and use it for grubbing work chopping roots and the like, but as compared to a quality kukri or kukri-like knife or machete it's going to be sub-par in performance.

Two questions:
1. What are you looking to do with this knife, do you want an authentic-ish kukri or just a chopping tool?
2. How much is your time worth to you and is that how you want to spend it?

I bought a cold steel kukri machete and even with the crap factory edge it was OK. A couple minuets with my dremel took care of the grind marks and made a night and day difference. If it were me and you don't care if it looks authentic then try and sell it on ebay and buy a modern kukri-styled blade.

It you really want to sharpen that one than start out on a belt sander or carefully use a dremel to get close. It will save SO MUCH time.

BudK I think actually has a video of it cutting things on youtube and it seems to perform ok.Although they did probably put a better edge on it. But dude if you are going to use amazon I just saw several better kukri's in the related items bar at the bottom. There was a kukri house,a kabar and a coldsteel.

I know someone who has had good luck with theirs. They had to do some serious sharpening, but it performs pretty well. You already bought it, so work on it and you may be quite pleased. The heat treat can be hit or miss on hand made khuks at any price, so give it a shot. Good luck.

Thanks for your insights and comments, this will be a working knife used around the property. I only bought it, after reading the reviews and watching the video, what could I lose, a few $ and my time.

Its hardly exclusive to BudK as i got one from KnifeCenter. I found it to be a very poor approximation of a Kukri.
