Kukri kata videos.

To those who know Kali - does that look, well, skilled? I'm looking at it from the standpoint of someone who has only trained in Korean martial arts and has only studied staff as far as weapons go, but some of the things he was doing went against what I would call the "way it should be done," so to speak. I'd like the opinion of someone more used to looking at Kali. It's entirely possible that it simply operates on different principles than what I have experience with. Any thoughts? Thanks!

*edit: When I said "skilled" I was talking about little details that are hard to pick up but very important nonetheless. Obviously he knows how to handle the blades. I was more getting at the technical proficiency.

Thanks for the vids.

I only watched the first one (slow connection), but uh, I guess I'm just impressed that he didn't cut himself. Would that be considered an actual fighting technique, or just a flashy dance?

Twirling...?

I'm going to bed.

Goodnight, Take care.

i think it is an interesting dance. 'kata' like this are one training technique. usefull in combat? of little practical use in the age of gunpowder. would i want a big knife handy if i ran out of bullets, yes.

odds are i will never be involved in a situation where the effort involved to learn a formal weapon kata would be productive. having used one to chop wood and brush, brambles and having it handy if the stuff hits the fan would probably be as instructive to my muscles and a lot more useful.

for a westerner i'd say it might be usefull in impressing correct technique on flabby musculature which we tend not to use as a .45 will let the flabbiest of us defeat the most skilled warrior. it's a hobby activity which i'm sure gives many pleasure.

modern gurkhas apparently recieve little or no dance instruction with kukhris. most of them have grown up with one in their villages, learning how to use them was a survival requirement. there are a number of informative items on this forum via search and more on HI's website with regards to this.

tinmaddog... not really kali if he thinks it is its a sloopy basic attempt at a sinawali, ( kata is a japanese word for form and it would not be called that in kali/ Arnis) I would equalte the skill ( in the vids) at about a yellow sash or a student with about a year or so of training.
It looks more like a routine he worked out. To be effective at fighting a lot of the footwork has to be undone and the arms flailing like that would not be good. However the positive for him is that few people have done any real development with any formal drills with a Khuk so he is ahead of most people.

Azis, thanks. That's basically what I thought. It's without a doubt impressive that he didn't chop an arm off, but it really did seem sloppy. Lots of placement of the khukris that wasn't really useful, just cool looking.

I assume "sinawali" is the Philipino equivalent to kata? Yeah, I knew that was a Japanese word - a lot of ppl use them all interchangably - we call our forms "hyung."

Lol. I'd say that another positive for him is that few people without some form of firearm would want to get anywhere near a maniac swinging khuks around like that. :D

lol, yeah, he is Second Level:

He has passed the First Level of "Cut Not Thyself."

But he's stuck in the Second Level of "Cut Not Thy Innocent Bystanders."

I read somewhere once, that "PeeWee Herman could kill Bruce Lee with a .45." Words to remember.

Take care.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Just about every move he made was just plain wrong in several ways, but then its a youtube vid

Cheers Guys,

I guess as his attackers were imaginary it doesnt matter to much that his not Bruce Lee, It looks like fun & good for fitness to me, real combat doesnt normaly look like that.

The kora as a weapon looks rather wicked I thought, a case of trapped & done!
