I know nothing about Kukris except that I really like the couple I have handled, one was a CS LTCor GK (can't remember() and the other was a large one brought back from india. A workingknife not a tourist piece. Obviously you folks think pretty highly of the HY stuff and I like the idea of nepalese made. So I want to pick up a largelight kukri for MA practice and possible light cutting. I live in FL. and the vedgetation is pretty light. I am thinking maybe 20-25 in length and a fighter more then anything else. I also want a smaller heavier knife that could serve as an outdoor carry blade, mostly utility possibly some heavier chopping. What are your recommendations? Would the WWII or Mark II serve well in the latter role? Oh yeah and I like plain jane, no silver and as little embellishment as possible.
looking forward to your suggestions.

Thanks
Sam

Hi edgetrip; welcome to H.I.'s forum!

For martial arts, you'd be most interested in the Sirupati, Chitlangi, and Kobra. There are a few others, but some were special runs, and not readily available. The Kobra is the lightest of the lot, and is "plain Jane". All can be used for light work... Take a look at all the khukuries on H.I.'s website:

For a rugged chopper, get an A.K. It is guaranteed unbreakable even under heavy use. The WWII would also be a pretty good chopper, but not like the A.K.

Hope this helps!

Maybe a Sirupati or Gelbu Special for the light/MA stuff and a BAS or a 15" AK for the heavier stuff. A 18" WWII would prabably cover it all though.

Sam, Welcome to the HI Cantina. For the martial arts blade, you'll probably want to go with something like a sirupati or Kobra. For the heavier chopper, the WWII, especially the 18" model will work quite well. You might also want to take a look at the 18" Ang Khola.

Hmmm. A Sirupati or Gelbu Special sounds like they might fit your needs. I myself am a big fan of the Chitlangi, but it does not fit the desription of "plain Jane". The Kobra could work for you except for the heavy chopping part, not really made for it.I have seen a few kobras around that I think could stand up to it, but they are not covered under the warrenty if used for heavy chopping.

Man I wish that I typed faster. I start to type my response and there are three ahead of me by the time I finish! Oh and welcome edgetrip.

Hi Sam, and welcome to the cantina.

For the fighter/machete I would suggest the Kobra. Definately not a chopper. If you want something a little bigger, a chitlangi is a wonderful blade. They come in a range of weights, depending on the Kami and his mood at the time. Just call or email Uncle Bill and let him know your preference on weight.

For the other blade, if you're on the smaller side, a 15" AK or BAS. If you're taller, a 16.5" WWII, or a Chiruwa AK. If you want to do serious chopping (>5") go with an 18" WWII, AK, or Ganga Ram.

Just my opinions :)

Steve

Gee, I type slow. When I started, there were no other replies!

Hey Sam:)

welcome! I think a kobra might be right up your ally for the light stuff. I've used my kobra models for everything from taming viny overgrowth to chopping through a 4-5" diameter tree. However, for the heavy stuff i would opt for something in the AK and WWII area. the 15" AK is an awesome packable knife, but as far as plain jane i'd go with the wwII either 18 or 16.5". wonderful blades. My all around favs. enjoy it! you can't make a wrong choice:)

Welcome Sam.

My choice would be an 18" Chitlangi for defense and an 18" GRS otherwise known as a BGRS for medium to heavy chopping. I have a 21"+ Chitlangi that always goes traveling with us. And my 18" BGRS goes along for any rougher stuff.

The 21"+ Chitlangi is for the bigger fellows as well as the ones like me with short arms.;)
The Chit's cut like a much heavier khuk and most are double fullered for extra strength!:D

Awesome, thanx ya'll. I am starting to regret joining bf as now everday I am made aware of new toys that I absolutely must have. Prioritizing is a bit)h ain't it.

cool, kukri comes next though

You said "kukri" (singular)? You don't know what you're getting into...

Well, maybe you do... The trick is to get past denial quickly and start enjoying the disease!

Tell me about it. I got like 6 in 2 months... You bring the first khuk into your house, then it invites all its friends! And it's not done yet...

The villager models are plain Jane, but excellent blades, if you don't mind doing a little finishing work yourself. An 18" Sirupati would be excellent for self-defense (or offense) and still handle light cutting. If you're looking for a more GP blade capable of medium work, I'd opt for the 16.5" WWII. I have both in villager models.

How about a Malla? They are the most weapon oriented and stand up to the abuse of work very well. they are usualy around 17 inches.

I only have on khuk a chit at the 21" mark, i just about swear by it , but they are all right just gotta get the ones you want until you are done. Hopefully that day exists ;)

Welcome.
Every khukuri HI makes is a formidable weapon in trained (or untrained) hands.

I used to have my favorites, but now my eyes have been opened to the possibilites in all of them.

Pick any one and it will fight well for you.

Some are too light and thin for heavy work, however. So, maybe you might need two....

Edgetrip?

Run !!! Run as fast as you can!!!! Go NOW!

Hire someone to fight and chop for you. These people won't warn you because they have fallen victim to the virus, but it is insidious and will begin to take over your idle moments as you work up justifications for yet another H I khukuri.

(don't tell them I told you. ;) )

most smart people buy three or four.
one for fighting, one for light gardening, one as an heirloom for the boy, one for display.
ill bet you need to do the same thing.
its tradition!

Well considering I have never handled one of these and am already pretty convinced I need two of'em I can definetly forsee a fast downward spiral. To bad they don't let ya sell your blood and plasma around here.
