What is the purpose for the notch in the ricasso on most kukris?

I notice that all the "traditional" designs include it, while Cold Steel and Ontario kuks don't.

The two notches seem to be too far forward to serve as a finger choil, and they aren't sharp enough to serve as gut hooks or line cutters.

So...why?

That notch is called the CHO or KAURI.
I have heard that it's porpose is to keep blood from running down onto your hand.
It is also said to have religous significance. the truth seems long lost in history.
If you go to the Himalayan Imports sub forum here you will find many opinions and lots of referance materail on the subject.

My recollection is that the notches are to prevent blood from following along the blade into the handle of the knife.

the real meaning has been lost to time but is generally said to be spiriitual..blood dripper is the same as knives with blood grooves....pure marketing

Blood groove.. sounds like groove metal band.
Or fuller perhaps?

Supposedly to represent the trident of Shiva, God of destruction. That's the meaning I prefer anyways.

btw, CS and Ontario (plus Kabar and all the others) merely make large hooked knives, they are not real Khukris in design or performance.
