I just got an Indian issued Kukri at a gun & knife show recently, and I would like to sharpen it. It doesn't have much of an edge. I know it comes with a Chakmak and a Karda, but both knives are the same size. How can I sharpen it? Would a sharpening stone work or could I take it to a belt sander? All help is appreciated. Thanks! BTW i'm new here....

Welcome. Do a search for sharpening and see what comes up. Check out the HI Home page.

Do a search for sharpening in this forum and you'll learn wonders :)
Lots of folks use sandpaper on a mousepad to get a convex edge. But The old stone method works fine as well, it's just difficult because of the curved blade.

Make sure you use an old stone; the younger ones don't like it as much.

you can use a stone or a file. If you're right handed, hold the knife in your left hand, edge up, tip pointing away from you (palm supporting the spine - like you're trying to peel a giant carrot....:D). With your right hand, run the stone/file/whatever back and forth trying your best to keep the angle consistent (around 25 degrees each side). Do this for both sides of the blade.

Your Indian khukuri will be pretty soft (relatively) and should be quite easy to sharpen.

I'm thinking it may be one of AC's government issue khuks. If so then a belt sander would definitely be the best way to go. The one I got years ago had a flat spot close to a 1/16 inch! They're supposed to be able to be sharpened with a file or so the instructions say, but that would be a last resort for me.

I read the advice on all of these posts, and it really helps! On a side note, what would happen if I were to take my kukri to a sharpener found in a can opener?
