just have a quick question,on a standard black coated kukri sheath i seen posted on this forum or another forum how to take the black finish off by washing it under warm water and the sheath comes out a nice brown color.anybody ever done this or heard of this,i cant find where i seen it,can i take the black finish off.thanks.

AFAIK, you cannot wash an H.I. scabbard and remove the black (or any) color, it is dyed into the leather. You can touch it up with liquid polish. Some of the other khukuri companies may at times use boot black to color their sheaths instead of using dyed leather. This is why the color is so easily removed. You can use the search function to see if you can find the thread here, but i don't remember ever seeing one and i've read almost everything posted here for over a year and have thoroughly browsed the archive from stem to stern.

Dying leather isn't fun. The last I checked it involved some pretty nasty fumes. Also, once leather is dyed black, I've never seen it completely lose it's color without damaging the leather itself.

If you want to change the look a little, you can just remove the brass tip of the scabbard. I'm not sure how to go about that though.

i didnt realize it was a dye, i just remember someone washing the black out of the leather, might of been a different forum,i like the brown leather look actually.maybe ill make a sheath.anyway ive been saving up for a hi kuk and my wife and daughter ordered a different kukri for me last week or so,it will be here saturday. its a bhojpure i think she ordered from khhi or kht,im not mad or nothing, ill still end up with a hi eventually cant wait till saturday, i gifted my panawal to a friend who drove me nuts wanting to buy it.
