What do people prefer for batoning larger and medium logs for fire and shelter building, cutting small saplings, stripping off branches, and other heavy camping and wilderness tasks-- kukri or large wilderness or bowie type shape? Or maybe something else even? By large, I am thinking 9 in blade or bigger.

I think that this question really depends on what else you plan on bring with you in the way of knives.
When I am travelling light for a couple of days in the bush, I bring my Khukuri, 13" blade, for chopping duties, a 5-6" fixed blade for smaller chores, and what ever EDC I happen to be stuck on at the time. If I am going a little on the heavier side and an extended stay I leave the khuk at home and grab a good camp axe instead.

Large knives have their place and I would never turn one down, I just like my khuk over a large wilderness knife

I think it comes down to what you like.

I take differant blades with me on outings, Kukri's, Bowies, Hatchets, machetes and such. They all have there strengths and weaknesses, but can all be made to work.

Personally, I enjoy using a large 10"-11" Bowie the most, I think it's both fun and versital. I find that it works well for many jobs, if I don't want to bring half a dozen tools with me on a hike.

-But that's just me.

On a hike I max out at 3 blades, I would rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it. Besides the Khukuri mounts nicely to the side of my pack and the extra weight is unnoticable to me, I am sure it would be the same thing for a large wilderness blade as well. I should also mention that my idea of a hike is to head out in the morning walk into the bush till I get hungry, or half of the daylight is gone, sit down make a good meal then head back out. I am actually planning a little day trip right now. Its really about getting out and cooking a good meal, pork tenderloin this time, and enjoying it in the outdoors. May go hunting some burl this time too.

Its really just personal preference. I "almost" lived in the woods for several years with a 3 blade Old Timer folder and a kuk. an axe or hatchet might be appropriate for heavy use or deep winter where lots of firewood is needed. My .02 is the kuk out cuts even the best large knife and is just plain more fun to use. best to you. anrkst
