Kukri

to make a khukuri via stock removal you need a plate thats 18"x6' (to 8" depending on how much curve you want)x1/4"

personally, i would get it 18x8x1/2. a2 in that dimention - at its absolute cheapest (from toolanddie.com) costs 73$ for the 1/4", and 181$ for the 1/2"x8"x18".

thats a lot of money for base steel, though i would imagine that infi would be a lot more in those dimentions. to stock removal a peice like that youd waste a good 40% of the steel (even given that your using the cuttoff peices) and it would be hell to grind out.

i know that jerry has done some forging, but the vast majority of his work is stock removal, wich makes a khukuri one of those bottom of the list projects on a plate thats already full for years to come

or so it would seem to me...

I'm not aware of any actual Busse Khukuri. The closest I know of to a Khukuri from Jerry is the Behemoth, made for Uncle Screwtape. I think it is now in the possession of wetdog1911. Perhaps Rob can share a picture of it with us. Or, perhaps he can just sell it to me, so that I can share a picture of it. :)

So it's an economics issue? Hmmm. Well, I'd pay a premium for an INFI khukuri. Man, I bet it would kick ass! Talk about a chopper.

economics+greif

im sure it could be done, but you might have to hound jerry to do it for a few years before he caves :D

id still like to see an infi bali (some have been made before without infi by jerry)

Well, not just economics, Sean (UncleScrewtape), told me when Jerry finished the Behemoth he would not do another. Waaay too much grinding involved.

I don't have a pic, but you can see it at Bad Mojo in the custom section, X19, along with the plastic model used for a pattern.

A LOT of thought went into this design. Sean told me he wanted an ultimate "Mountain Man" knife that would handle just about anything. The upswept tip for skinning. The hump on the back of the blade for breaking bones. Jam the tip into a block of wood and with the recurve blade you have a draw knife and with just the size of the thing, you have a chopper.

I bought it used, so it's no safe queen. I haven't really used it yet, but it's allready been 'loved', so no hesitation there. The only thing I would add, when I get pants made for it, would be a SK on the front of the sheath for the small knife and a pouch on the back for a DMT card.

Oh, and some mountains I guess. The're in short supply down here though. LOL

I guess I don't know that much about Busse manufacturing techniques. I know the shop does do some grinding by hand, but I thought most of it was done with CNC type equipment and then finished by hand. With CNC you can pattern just about anything. But yeah, making a Khukri by hand out of INFI would be a chore, I'm sure.

This what yer lookin fer?

Well, that is mighty nice, but not exactly what I was talking about. I'm thinking more along the lines of an Ang Khola type blade with a pronounced bend. I have one from HI with a 12 inch blade, but I caught myself imagining how nice one would be in INFI with Micarta slab handle. Drool, drool. :)
