In my limited expierience every one has one at home in the cities to deal with the robbers & burglars who creep at night.
In the hill villages there a daily tool for evry use, chopping kindling, food, defence etc.
In the mountain villages 8 hours walk from the nearest road a kukri a pick or mattock or an axe & a sickle may be the only tools in the entire village.
But power tools, satelite dishes, mobiles, japanese 4x4s & chainsaws are commen amoungst the Rana ,Shah & buisness or Brhamin/ Rajput based familys & those who have done much service in the British gurkhas.
20% live well 80% live on a subsitance diet of minute portians dhal & rice ,,,,
During the civil war you were not allowed to whear them in cities or between towns. In wild country, evryone still took them if gooing into jungle or whatever.
