Yes, this post is as bad as it sounds :( but you probably should hear my stupid mistake so you can avoid the same problem.

- I'm on pain killers so it might take a while to post. please be patent.

You've probably heared (and seen) how how well a khukuri can cut wood. Well, I can tell you from sad experience that it's really good at cutting people too. Luckally the Micro Surgen was able to repare the damage. Let me backup and start at the begining.

Saturday Oct 26th, I went up Ephraim Canyon to do a service project with the Outdoor Club. We were going up to prep one of Snow Colloges cabins for the Winter. Along with the tools we had 2 dutch ovens and plenty of food. As for me I had my trusty 15" AK, a bunch of knives, first aid kit, water and other stuff I like to have on trips, all in a backpack.

While the food was cooking in the cabin (I was on kitchen duty) I went out side to cool off and cut some more pine logs for the fire with my AK. As my chopping block I chose a 3.5' to 4' tall stump. next I layed a 7' long 4" to 5" die. pine limb to chop. Things were going good at first was making 1' logs in no time flat, only took 1 to 2 chops to cut through the limb. When there was only a 2.5' section left, I held onto the limb with my Left hand (so the log would not move)*WARNING Don't do this, It's BAD* and took a swing with my right. The first hit went okay but on the second swing the AK bounced off the limb, and cut into my left arm (top side) just below the wrist.:eek::(:(

I pulled the AK off my wound, looked at it the calmly walked back to the cabin (tossing the AK into a wood pile by the front door), grabbed my frient Trent and my first aid kit and went to a truck out side the front door. Told him I had cut my wrist and needed his help to bandage it up and where the first aid kit was. Then I said (more or less) "Get it out NOW, I'm not feeling good. I need to rest my head on the truck". And next thing I know, 3 guys are holding me up and I'm coming to. my head clearted a bit, the got me inside and laying down (All the while I'm giving every one instructions on how to help me and who to call). They started to wrap my wrist but did it wrong (mind you, I lost very little blood, maybe a table spoon or less) so I told them how to do it right. "No, you don' do it that way, this (non adhesive steril pad) goes on first then wrap it with gause then tape it".

After I gt some water I was led to a truck and headed down the mountain where the EMT's were waiting. After passing out that one time I felt prety good considering that I could not bend my wrist but could move my fingers. We got to the hospital, I called some body to come in with me then the docter looked at the wound. Said we had done a great job wrapping it up. We desided to see a Plastic Surgen cause he was better and there could be more damage so my mom and a friend took me to Provo to have him operate.

It's a good thing too, because I needed Micro Surgery to repair 4 tendons, some blood vessels, nerves and tissue. Went into Surgery Late Saturday and was awake but groggy by 1:45am Sunday. Was out for maybe 3 hours or a little less. Was sent home around 11:30am Sunday. Went to my brother Seth's house in Provo were I'm staying for the week.

Am on drugs, Percocet for pain (325MG every 4 hours) and Cefadroxil an antibiotic (500MG) twice a day. The good news is, I should be getting the caste off in 4 to 5 weeks and will have full use of my arm, wrist and hand again.:)

So, when you are working with you Khukuri or other sharp object, BE CAREFULL and remember SAFETY FIRST so you can avoid a trip to the ER and all that other unpleasant stuff. Cause you might not be as lucky as me.

Hope you guys have a great week!:) Uncle, good luck with the move. And goodf luck with the contest. I look forward to seeing who wins. You are all in my prayers. Will be online but mostly quiet the next few days. I'm going to pop another pain pill and try to get some Sleep. Have fun and be safe,

DAYUM, HEBER!!!!! You have us counting our toes and fingers....Keep it tucked in, Bud, and let us know how you are.

Finally got the thing posted. Am going to take another pain pill and try for some more sleep. If I can get this dadgum bottle open with one hand.:p

Now Uncle, post some deals and have a feeding frenzy. Those are always fun to read (even if you're broke).:)

WHAT!!! You go to all the trouble of slicing yourself up and no pics !?!?!

:D

All in all, I guess it could've been worse. Speedy recovery!

Sorry to hear about the accident but thanks for the post. I agree that safety should be front and center in all that we do. If it is not safe, don't do it. I, for one, forget that advice on a regular basis.

Hope you heal up 100%.

You should let me sharpen your knives. You wouldn't have gotten a scratch.

Hopefully it will heal well.

:(

Thanks for sharing an experience we can all learn from. Fortuneately, the body forgets pain in time, so you'll walk away from it with a cool scar and some hard won wisdom. Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery, and it wasn't as bad as could have been. Bad enough, to be certain, but not as bad as what our imaginations were conjuring. Take care and heal quick, a man who's mastered the fine art of dutch oven cooking is a man to keep around.

I cringed at the thought of a full blow to your left hand by the 15" AK, after that something would definately feel out of place! Thank goodness that when you got it, it was on the bounce!

I have taken a few stiches here and there learning how to chakuma. But my worse experiences happen in the kitchen.
Maybe I am on a slower learning curve? ;)

How many stitches total Wildmanh?

Dayum Heber!!!! That's why we have the safety thread at the top of the page, guess you will make it in there now.;)

Stay warm and safe and don't fool around with sharp instruments until you're fully recovered and have All your strength back in that arm!!!!

And get well soon!!!!:)

I'm surprised they gave you percocet.

I have been wondering for a while about one hand holding what the other hand is cutting. I don't like it, even when the hands are far apart. Your misadventure tells me I was right to worry, and thanks for posting this. You'll heal up Ok, I'm thinking. Take care.

Percosets aren't much in the way of pain killers, at least the 5/325 mg tablets.
I take 40 mgs of Oxycontin 3 times a day along with 10 mgs of Baclofen, a muscle relaxer. My pain management doc just upped my Percosets from 5/325 mg to 10/325 mgs for breakthrough pain every 6 hours.
Even with that it only keeps the pain at a reduced level. It so seldom goes away completely that it is a pure pleasure to be completely pain free whenever that does occur.
(The 325 mgs is aceteminephen or plain old Tylenol.)

Now Percodans are another complete story. If I were on them I could kick King Kong's Ass seven days a week and twice on Sunday.:D

Yvsa, it's been a long time since I passed meds for a living and I don't even own a PDR anylonger, and I never dealt with pain management, other than my own.

The medical world seems to like the 'et' ending for mild and the the harder 'dn' ending for strong; darvocet, Darvon.

< (The 325 mgs is aceteminephen or plain old Tylenol.) >
So how much Percoset is in the '5' or '10', milligrams? Grains?

Is oxycontin the one people are abusing now? (yeah, I know, all are abused but there is a new one that everyone wants...that's how it goes.)
I'm glad I'm not in your league of pain.

You might consider asking them to drop the tylenol. It's hard on your liver and may not even enhance the level of pain moderation.
Tylenol manufacturers have got their hands on almost all pain meds. The current philosophy of pain managment is still so restrictive that they like mixing less effective ingredients in; anything as long as it's not habbit forming. I knew a guy who'd had surgery gone wrong and he was in agony every day. They would not give him enough medicine to function, they didn't want him to form a 'habbit'. He was 60 years old and they worried about habbit. He seriously considered heroin.
His was one of the saddest cases I knew. Even the Doctors agreed he was in agony. Too bad, their hands were tied by powerful medical boards.

Yep, oxycontin is BIG in east Kentucky. Lots of people and doc's have gone to jail over that one. Highly addictive.

Yvsa, BE CAREFUL with that stuff!
