Hey everyone. Well it has been a bit of a journey since i decided i needed a new knife. I was looking for something as an EDC for whatever may come up. I first bought a 20 dollar crkt m-16 from walmart, then exchanged it for a kershaw scallion, then exchanged that for a blur. Thats about the time I got into the forums. I decided to return the kershaw altogether and get a benchmade. Figured I'd go for a budget model and picked up a griptilian. It was nice but not quite what I was looking for. The handle felt "cheap" and it was a little too fat for me. I somehow convinced myself to up the budget a little and tried to decide between the kulgera and mini-skirmish. I settled on the kulgera due to its slightly lower price and looks. Well it just came in the mail today and these are my impressions.
The knife looks very classy. You could wear this with a suit. It somehow feels smaller than the grip even though it is slightly longer. This may be due to the narrow blade profile. This is the first time I have handled G-10 and I must say it feels nice and sturdy like any other layered fiberglass. I will say that I didn't like the fact that the griptilian didn't have full length liners and was attracted to the fact that this knife did. However now that I have it i can see that there are large holes cut out of the liners. I am sure this is for weight reduction but I hope it doesn't compromise rigidity.
I will say that I worry about the nickel finish coming off of the clip and hardware but only time will tell.
There are a few issues I have with the knife and I will list them here (see pictures below)
As you can see in the first picture. if you look at the back of the blade you can see that the ridge where the false back edge begins is crooked...and I mean pretty crooked. I have noticed some sort of asymmetry on all of the knives I have purchased so maybe they all have some problem or another.
The second picture shows a view from the bottom of the handle. There are three screws that hold the clip on but it seems that the one on the left is tightened more than the one on the right. This caused the clip to sit somewhat lopsided. Perhaps this could be fixed with a torx bit (that I DON'T have). I hope the holes are not drilled incorrectly.
Last but not least, (and i experienced this issue to some degree with the griptilian), pulling the axis lock release button down must sometimes be done with force as the lock seems to "stick". what i mean is that when the knife is opened and the lock engaged, an attempt to release the mechanism is met with sometimes considerable resistance. it seems to be dependent on the force used to open the knife however this happens regardless of how careful you are.
Well there you have it. Its a beautiful knife that, if anything, seems a little....tame. Please feel free to comment on anything that I mentioned. And if anyone has had similar experiences with crooked grinds and crooked hardware let me know. Thanks all and later.
