I just picked up my 18" AK from the mail.

I noticed that the edge is not straight. It twists a bit. Is this normal?

From the few khuks I have, a very slight gradual deviation from a perfectly straight edge isn't that unusual, especially deep in the recurve. Just a tiny single hook to one side or the other.

I'd have to check them all, but I think any bit of a "wow" on the belly was always removed with a bit of serious sharpening on stones. This usually helped in the recurve too. The sandpaper/mousepad sharpening won't correct this, and though I've dished out and rounded the edges of some stones, I think it's worth giving a new khuk a good sharpening to true up the edge. Though the stones aren't now ideal for perfectly flat bevels like on Scandinavian blades they are now optimized for khuks.:)

If the edge wobbles back forth several times over a few inches of length, I'd say that's not normal in my limited experience. Especially in the belly.:)

I've got a few that twist, just a little bit, from spine to edge. It's pretty subtle, but obvious if you look for it. Some have commented that it might enhance chopping, depending on the handedness of the twist and which arm you chop with. I can't confirm, but I suppose it's theoretically possible.

I'd take Bill's advice - use it and if it's a problem send it back.
I still have both of mine with this "feature".

Uncle Bill replaced the Kumar 18" AK with a Bura 18" AK.

Perfect blade. The edge deviates about a mm along the length of the blade. Grinds are so close, you would think that a machine made it. Polish is great.

Handle is made of Saatisal wood. It's beautiful.

Buttcap and handle has the slightest twist to it, but I can live with that. Handle fits my hand much better than the Kumar AK. I think Kumar's handles are for hands larger than mine.

Here's the pic.

The slight twist or bend is symptomatic of hammerworking and forging. My other handforged pieces have the same or similar characteristics.

Are you talking about the blade or the handle.

They both have a slight deviation from straight. The blade is almost perfect. The butcapp is rotated about 3 degrees, also barely noticable.

I just sharpened it up with my spyderco ceramic rods. I didn't know that you are not supposed to sharpen it to shaving sharp.

So mine shaves now. I was pretty impressed that the 1/2 thick blade could shave.

Sundsvall-- who said you aren't supposed to get your khuks shaving sharp??? They will work just fine with a working edge, but they take such a keen edge that it seems a shame not to have them razor sharp.
