Gelbu told me that Kumar set an earnings record for the month of April. He was paid 35,000 rupia for the khukuris he made. 10,500 of this went to his helpers, 3 guys at 3,500 each but this still left Kumar the princely sum of over 20,000 NC. That is not a lot in our economy, about $300, but in a country where the per capita income is about $150 it is astounding amount. Having almost 20 years hands on experience with Nepal and its economy I am almost certain that no kami has ever earned this much money in a single month.
I am very pleased and quite happy with the wages paid BirGorkha employees. This is a testament to the fairness and generosity of Pala and Gelbu who could have easily paid a third or fourth of this amount and still made Kumar and the other kamis happy. Master kamis in other shops generally make less than our helpers and apprentices.
This news makes it easier for me to look at this old wrinkled face in the mirror in the AM and lets me sleep a little better at night. And, everybody who is an HI pal and customer shares in this good karma. Good going, boys!
