Lube or no lube....

Just curious, haven't done much to my 801, what does everyone do as far as care and lubrication...
Thanks

I took apart and cleaned my ZT0777 with a little gun lubricant after I received it. Same procedure with all my knives. It doesn't flip any better than my brother's stock ZT0777.

My 0561 is brand spanking new, but the 0801 I've had for six months. Neither of which I have lubed. Both are smooth as silk.

I run the pivot dry.
A little Tuf-Glide on the detent area doesn't hurt though.

For most of the time I had my 0560 I ran it dry. When I did start regularly lubing it I used a small drop Chris Reeve flourinated grease on each side.

I use a drop of gun oil. It's not really necessary, but it makes the action go from very smooth to near-frictionless.

So is what I feel the action of the knife rotating on the detent ball or the kvt?

Yes, that is what facilitates the easy opening, the bearings. What you are feeling is not going to go away with the addition of any lube, rather it's just the way that design is (as well as other KVT knives).

From my experience, the 'friction reduction' provided by the KVT is for the most part static in regards to lets say how tight you adjust the pivot. When adjusting the pivot you may want the blade to fall back into the handle under its own weight, so you back the pivot out and voila! the blade now falls under its own weight! How ever, the change in the action that you say you can feel is in actuality from less pressure on the blade from the detent not the KVT being "squeezed" less like in washer knives.

That may be confusing, so let me put it this way, if you have a blade that can fall back into the handle and a blade that can't fall back into the handle, and you relieve the pressure from the lock bar on the tang, you will see that the blade moves just as freely at both pivot settings. When the detents are allowed to rest on the tang again, one setting is smoother than the other. That is why I say lubing the detent is the important factor. If your knife is feeling a little rougher or you want the action to be smoother, lubing the detent ball and/or track will yield appreciable results.

Took my 0560BW apart to clean out some metal dust, added some frog lube to the blade where to bearings contact and it actually flipped worse. Took it apart again, wiped the lube off and it flipped great. If I'd had some thinner grease (CRK grease) on hand that may have made a difference. But KVT flips fine lubeless.

I just tried some nano oil on my 0562 and it greatly increased the smoothness of the action. Like it's floating!

I'm new to it but after a month of edc is still butter smooth.

Cool, thanks for all the replies...I think I will stick with the clean dry method...just not sure about taking it apart...I take most of my knives apart for routine cleaning and adjusting, but the last Zt I took apart had to go back as I couldn't get the blade centered...it was my 350

If you wanna clean the pivot area, you could just put a few of drops of tuffglide on each side, and lightly shake the knife while opened and tip down. You will see all kinds of gunk drip down the blade suspended in the tuffglide.

It cleans the pivot, and you don't have to take the knife apart.

Finally broke down and put a few drops of weapons shield clp on it...really made it slicker then snot on the action...
