Kydex and the CG SOB or other knives too small for a dangler.

Soooooooooo......

I seriously have an issue with high riding handles on Kydex sheaths. In my expierence when a knife is of a size RMD (even this one is almost too small for a dangler )sized or bigger a dangler is the only option I purchase when buying kydex.

The problem is small knives that are too small for most dangler set-ups...say SOB and Rodent Solution sized.

I found that the cheap Mora knives with thier pouch style plastic sheaths are far more Ideal for belt carry than kydex and tek-loks that only cover slightly more than the blade.

Not sure if anyone is faced with this issue, but I would like to challenge the Kydex benders here to find a way to get more/most of the handle more even on the belt line. Nothing makes me happier than sitting down or bending wrong and getting jabbed with the handle of my knife.

Whoever can accomplish this would make me most grateful, and most likely earn my business for the 8 knives from Ohio that are coming my way. Those are just the ones I have on order as of now, more are likely to be ordered on any given Wednesday until Busse/Kin goes back to a fixed line-up.

If anyone else is on board please voice your opinion here....

My thoughts are a Kydex version of a Randall style pouch sheath much like the Mora Companion models.

This is not directed toward any specific maker, almost all kydex sheaths, factory or custom, irritate me the same....plain and simple, too much knife above the belt line if it does not have a dangler.

Some quick pics of a drop loop he made me for my Mud Mutt.

It actually carries better than I thought, kinda wish it was a inch longer drop. But it was something he was experimenting with at the time. And that's just personal opinion, but does ride very well not snagging or getting in the way. The material is a flexible but firm ? rubber like material and it works very well. I'd buy another one for sure only this time I'd try to use a tape measure to figure the drop better for him.

I carry my SOB in a Mashed Cat with nylon drop loop. It works great.

I've got one of those for my 411, the nylon has a Velcro back you can adjust. Just didn't have any pics of it to post. Between the two the material David uses is more giving flex wise ? the nylon works well but seems to twist not give
( flex ) Both are great sheaths and I'm very happy with both.

This looks like a good start...

If I get a chance I'll try to take a pic of them side by side.

Cool. I have some Buy Brown sheaths that have Mashed Cat danglers, I am not a fan of velcro, and I believe the size of the danglers would be too much for a smaller knife. The BB Mashed Cat dangler I have for my RMD is damn near too much. It is managable but borderline, any smaller of a knife and it would be a NO-GO.

Here are some pics of the two mentioned above.

If your concerned about loop width, the nylon, and rubberized nylon straps come in a huge selection of widths that can be cut and sized to your specs according to length and drop distance of the sheath. Yea, I've been doing some kydex research lately and its amazing how much is out there.

Leather drop loops are becoming common as well, with a nice small kydex bolt on link would perform very well and be stiff enough not to flop around too much.

Now, dangler implies a ring in the pivot point between the sheath body and the loop. Is this what your talking about? If so there are quite a few size options for the ring so that really isnt a concern. The loops can be sized to spec for your needs as to drop and width. I've seen and had access to anything from 1/2 inch wide up to 2inches in width.

Its out there and so much potential to the maker with some imagination. :D

Awe crap, I had a big post all written up, changed seating position, and lost it on my phone. But fortunately Leatherman above hit most of my points.

So I'll just add that Kydex is the "Lego" of holster/sheath material. And any good kydex sheath with attachment points installed properly can be added-to, to create the perfect customized product. Whether it's raising, lowering, rotating, or adding a cant (angle) to the knife. Or adding any of a thousand retention options. Doesn't matter if you use more kydex, leather; nylon or any combination. Only limited by imagination, time, or money.

Personally I like to get involved with my wants/needs and have to learn how things work. Then when I know I can make and/or accomplish something, then I tend to wander on to the next. Thinking back over a few years a few of my "diversions " had been from scuba, to skydive, to rock climbing, to paragliding, to pilot license, to embroidery, back around to leatherwork from my teens. Lately I've also been obsessing about sharpening, which requires lots of variation between actual steels.

This is a Godspeed tactical but I'm not sure he is still making them.
.... he made a nice sheath but his arsehattery around taking orders and not filling them for MONTHS on end (while still selling on ebay etc) got him banned from here I believe.

Dave (BB) can do the kydex drop down in place of the flexible rubber, that is how my basic 4 sheaths are done and they work very nicely. I haven't tried the flexible rubber option yet, but it looks interesting. The kydex drop is nice and stiff so it doesn't hamper the draw and on a short blade it seems perfect.
