How does kydex react with chemicals like DEET, gas, oil, suntan lotion (lol)?
I'm especially concerned about the DEET, since the outbreak of killer, death ray mosquitos here in NYC
DEET screws up Concealex and Kydex royally. If you are using DEET, do one of the following:
1) Apply DEET away from sheath, then put sheath on belt. Wash sheath thoroughly afterwArd.
2) Cover sheath in tape, then apply DEET as desired.
DEET will soften the material and cause the dyes to leech out. I did some tests with the materials completely submergeed in DEET and they did okay, although some people told me that a light spray with plenty of air to react with will f the stuff up big time.
Chiro75,
You make it sound as though if DEET touches kydex it will explode
Any one familiar with DEET realizes that the problem is DEET and not other products. DEET should ALWAYS be used with caution around synthetics.
I have had synthetic rifle stocks begin breakdown due to this stuff.
DEET is not only bad for you gear but also bad for children. If used improperly it can cause nervous system reactions. I personally know of children going into convulsions from misuse of DEET. In this area, Camp Lejuene, some seriously powerful DEET, stuff intended for use on equipment and not humans, gets sold at surplus outlets and people have no idea what they have.
AS FAR AS OTHER CHEMICALS....
Kydex and Concealex seem to live up to their claims as chemical resistant. You can research kydex on the internet and find the Standards (ASTM ?)that kydex is manufatured to. This should answer your question completely.
