Kydex Eyelets Splitting

I purchase brass eyelets from a manufacturer who sends them out for black oxide coating. I've been buying eyelets from this manufacturer for about 10 years with good success.

I'm having splitting problems with the last batch (5000) of black oxide coated eyelets I purchased. About 20% split on the backside when set.

The plain brass eyelets from the same manufacturer do not split.

I'm using the same setting tools I have always used, a set for hand setting and a set I use in the drill press. The setting tools are in good condition and my setting procedures are the same.

My Question: Is there anything in the black oxide application process that could harden the eyelets or otherwise cause them to split when set?

Thanks

Al, I use brass eyelets too and I think that the problem of splitting will come from the batch of eyelets. I would think that the brass may have been run through the machine a little cold or something that would work harden them a little more than usual. I know it is difficult to redo the eyelet after it has split. I would think to replace it, just heat up the kydex and push it out. After it cools, put in another one.
This is just an opinion and I don't know how you would do a hardeness test on them to see if they were work hardened.

I was just going to post and ask where to get good eyelets that don't split. I don't need huge quantities. 1/8" and 1/4". Thanks.

Given the quantity you purchased and the high rate of failure I would request a replacement batch of eyelets from the distributor and let them figure out why they're splitting. It's too much time and trouble to remove bad ones, and very difficult to get a good clean fit with another once you do. Sounds to me like they were hardened at some point during the coating process.

With that said, I was having such a hard time finding eyelets that I was happy with, I switched to using all Chicago screw assembly. Adds a buck to the cost of the rig but it's quicker and cleaner IMO.

Saber, talk to Blade-Tech. They sell industrial quality eyelets. You do need an eyelet setting die set for them though. Using the cheap crap from the knife supply houses won't work.
