Kydex & G10 question

I've just formed a couple of sheaths for my Benchmade Nimravus.

No big deal in itself... However, everywhere the Kydex was in contact with the G10 (or the masking tape over the G10) has appeared what looks almost like a whitish bloom. NOT happy.

Does anyone have any suggestions what happened, how to fix it & how to avoid it in the future?

Cheers,

Peter

Adhesive from the masking tape? Just a guess. Spray it down with 409 cleaner and give it a good scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

Thought about that, but the tape didn't extend as far as the bloom. Whilst I haven't worked G10 before, I have made up a couple of sheaths for other G10 handled knives, and I've not seen this before.

I've scrubbed the thing down with washing up liquid & a limonene-based degreaser so far - what sort of thing is 409? Not one I recognise over here.

Thanks,

Peter

Its just 409 surface cleaner, i think is what he is talking about. Just look in your utility room or bathroom and you will find some i am sure.

If you have acetone available, it will do the trick. Just douse some on a rag, and rub down the area. This same thing occurs on my EBKs when making kydex scabbards.

Acetone - in the form of my wife's nail polish remover (didn't have any neat acetone on hand) has done the trick. Thanks, Ed.

409 surface cleaner - am I right in assuming this stuff is a non-abrasive cream cleaner? Closest (possibly Transatlantic) brand name I can think of is Cif (was Jif).

So... Any ideas what happened with the G10? The discolouring looked like the results of solvent fuming or something similar.

Peter

409 is a brand that must not be sold outside the US or North America.

409 is just a common kitchen/bathroom/countertop cleaner. No big deal. It comes in a spray bottle and is a liquid, not a cream or paste.

It just contains soap and solvent... cationic and nonionic surfactants, and a (probably pretty mild) solvent called 2-butoxyethanol.
