Kydex in Sheet form

Hi,

Okay, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but...

I have a friend who's into armour-making and chain-mail, and he's interested in trying out some Kydex sheet for moulding into plate armour.

Would anybody here know where he could obtain some kydex cheaply (eg offcuts, suplus etc.) ?

I mean, okay, fine, it's not strictly a *knife* issue per se :D, but you can use armour to stop getting stabbed, right? Besides, I'm thinking since Kydex is used for sheaths, somebody here might have some spare lying around they'd be willing to sell.

Thanks,
Victor

Call a local plastic supplier. They should carry it. You may find that there are several plastic suppliers near you.
I bought mine in town.

Hi,

I'm in Australia, which complicates matters somewhat, since there appears to be a dearth of plastic supplies around here (at least that I can find) :( . My friend told me that he did try asking around, but the companies usually only supply commercial quantities, and charge an arm and a leg for the stuff.

Anyway, when you say you bought yours in town, do you mean a store? What sort of price did you pay, and would I (or he) be able to order any?

Does anybody else know where you can buy a small quantity of kydex sheet?

bye,
victor

It isn't easy finding Kydex in the UK either - in full 8x4 sheets, let alone smaller pieces. So I bought a moderate amount, and now sell it on to (primarily) UK hobbyists...

For small pieces (1'x1') your best bet would probably be Texas Knifemakers Supply or Knife Kits.

I bought it from a place that sells plastic sheets. Look up plastic in the phone book. They shough cut you a piece. You can always get it fom texas knife supplier. I dont recall the price though.

Hello Victor

What part of Australia do you live in? I was living in Napier New Zealand for a number of years. It was a town of 50,000. I had trouble finding Kydex too. The local supplier did carry some but most of it was white. He also had some that was used by Air New Zealand but it was really thick (half an inch I think) and it was blue. He said that he could special order anything that I wanted but the cost of the air freight made buying just one 8 x 4 foot sheet prohibitive. What he did say was that standard ABS had similar properties and was much more commonly available. I did not do the research to verify if this was true.

One way to get off-cuts is to ask the supplier who he sells the whole sheets to. He is not really losing any business since you only want small quantities. You might then be able to sweet-talk one of his customers into selling or giving you some.

Good luck!

Phil

I have built armor of kydex back in the day and the same thicknesses we use for knife sheaths will probably not do much as far as protection goes. When fighting with ratan we always used 1/4 inch thickness with a closed cell foam backing to absorb some of the shock.

I have a place I can regularly get OD green kydex cuttoffs that are 3/16ths thick and about 18 inches by 24 inches if you could work in that size...

Let me know, I can send ya a peice to play with and see if it will work for ya!
