Hello!
Waiting impatiently for my bushcrafter, 7 or 8 spots down the list for completion.
Need some input from you on what sheath to get and why, thanks for the help.

I have a JRE leather one and it's okay. Leather is better...

Never can go wrong with leather!

Kydex has more carry options (horizontal, vertical, canted) and can be lashed to a pack.

The JRE sheath holds the knife deeper, the kydex sheaths holds the knife higher - unless you get a drop-loop kydex sheath (which I have yet to make for the Bushcraft..but there's always a first for everything!).

I can make a firesteel loop for the kydex sheath too.

My personal knife right now is an EDC in a kydex sheath. It is lighter and less 'forgiving' than a comparable leather sheath. IOW, leather will stretch/adjust, kydex doesn't.

If you let dust/dirt down into a kydex sheath it can scratch up your blade. BUT (important!) the finish I put on the Bushcraft is such that you can rub those scratches out very easily with a scotchbrite pad.

I got kydex for mine. I can make a leather sheath, if I want, but kydex is better for nasty field conditions where leather might hold moisture. IMHO, if it is a field knife, it's gonna get used and scratched up and doesn't make any difference which sheath it's in. If it's a safe queen, get leather, absolutely.

I've also seen several times where someone punched the blade completely through the side of a leather sheath, trying to force it back in. Usually happens when the knife is under winter garments, etc... In other words, it's awkward to get it back in the sheath, and leather won't resist penetration. FWIW... :)

BTW, Dan... My kydex came as a neck knife. How can I get a belt loop made for it?

I'm planning on getting another sheath for my bushcraft also (the standard JRE on kinda digs into my side after a while), I've had one (JRE) made for a Busse hg-55 with a pouch on the front for a stone, and I really like it, but I'm also considering the technical sheath from martin, with a dangler.
