I've gotten back to carrying OC daily recently, and wanted a good belt carrier for a relatively serious canister versus a "keychain grade". The 2oz types can be had in good formulas and allow fine-stream-type ranges out past 8 feet, and over 10 seconds of spray.

Yesterday I crashed my motorcycle doing 30mph while wearing it. The canister was slightly dented but didn't blow up or come out of the rig, a damned potent "proof of concept". That plus a *rapid* speed-draw and no glue or rivets needed adds up to a really slick setup. NOTE: I used .090 grade; having seen it hold up to this impact, if you're into extreme stuff I'd recommend that, although .060 would probably be fine for most apps.

(In case anybody's wondering I walked away with a sprained knee, minor damage to bike and zero damage to my laptop bungee-corded to the gas tank. The female person who the CHP are charging with hit and run was stupid enough to have a vanity plate of ULATE2 - if she ever gets off suspension flip her the bird for me if you run across her!)

Mr. March,
Design looks excellent.
Just wanted to say that I am glad that you were able to walk away from that accident with relatively minor injuries. Too many motorcyclists are killed by stupid, reckless drivers or worse yet, those drivers that simply have no clue or courtesy for motorcyclists. Take care of that knee man. Were you wearing your Mad Dog as well?

Jim, although I know you are very excited about your design for the a$$hole repelent holster, I really think you went WAY over the top in testing it!
Glad you're OK. In the future, keep the rubber side down.

Creighton: no, I was heading to work at a major bank HQ so the doggy would be...a bit much. In a CCW state, absolutely...see "politics", basically we're either gonna take our best shot at reform or I'm oughta here.

Hey Jim,

Betcha did not know I manufacture pepper spray huh! Here is a pic of me getting sprayed by my wife with daughter in arm.

Anyway, I have seen many different ways to carry pepper spray and have yet to find one which is damn near perfect. I would like to see a proto of yours and if we can use it I will give you your damn $1.00!

What you guys don't know is that this picture was taken shortly after Mike told his wife that he was hiring me...

Wait till he shows you the picture where he tells her that I'm moving to Florida! Can anyone say "AirTaser"?

Not as funny as my "I know what you did last Monday!" post.

Seriously, Mike, I EMailed you a request for your snail-mail address. I'll send you the fully-discharged (for safety) slightly dented can that survived the wreck and it's holster, you'll get a superb "proof of concept" package. Retention is still solid, the denting wasn't too bad but it's unsafe to carry IMHO.

You'll like this setup.

Spark:

LOL! That was hilarious.

Mike:

Wow. Did she really spray you or was it just a mock spray for commercial purposes?

The one that was done to me, I had a training gun on me. A friend of mine (who's been sprayed before for "occupational" reasons) sprayed me while another friend of mine tried to grab the gun from me. Then, upon the sprayer's signal, I was suppose to pull the gun out and double tap the "perp". Shameless as I am to admit this, I didn't last for more than 15 seconds before I started screaming for the signal. HEHE!

I hear horror stories about having to fight off TWO "perps" for a full minute, and THEN having to go around looking for the bucket of water, or having to be able to state your name, rank, serial number, AND sing the USMC song before being allowed to leave. Makes me cringe just have to think about having to go through that stuff just to wear a uniform.

Bagging grocery suddenly seems appealing. HEHE! Anyways, nice picture.

The picture was taken for commercial purposes. For the record I have been sprayed many times and I know just about all there is to know about pepper and hte effects from personal and professional experience. It is not a pleasureable experience and it stomps tear gas or mace any day.

Jim and Mike-
If you build it, I will buy some. I've been looking for a decent carry device and have not been at all satisified with what is comercially available. Let me know either here or via email!!

Guys, on a not totally unrelated matter, do you know if something similar is available for a Surefire 6P ? If not, how about it ?

Andy.

Andy, it could certainly be done; if I recall right Edgeworks already does. Check:
http://www.tacticalholsters.com/ - Scott Evans and co. have a great rep, and he's doing the sheath for The Outsider. I'll give a full report once I get it.

When I built the Pepper Packer I started with "what hand position and grip do I want at the start of the draw" and built a Kydex arrangement to put the canister right at that initial spot. That includes finger/wrist position in relation to where on the belt I wanted to mount it. The (right hand version) Packer will work anywhere from just right of belt buckle to all the way on the right hip.

I've never held or used a Surefire so I couldn't say what's optimal. If I wanted the final hold to be the "through the fingers" setup in off-hand along the gun grip, I guess vertical pointed business-end-down on the off-hand side might be fastest.

But anyways, that's how to sheath or holster ANYTHING. Work out the carry spot, the draw mechanics, build around that, don't worry about "tradition". JSP Bladeriggers are, so far as I'm aware, the absolute gods of this kind of thinking...but wow are they pricey.

Be careful with that 2oz can of freeze..here (in Florida) it is illegal to carry about your person unless your LE..It has to be the 1oz size used for personal protection..Never know, you could run into one of those ROOKIES and

Brantly,

The law is you can not carry over 1/2 Oz concealed. You can carry any size you want as long as it is not concealed. Also COPS don't really go after weomen who carry large units in their purse.

Not to combative, I was merely stating that the 2oz versions carried on your person could be construde as illegal in Florida. FYI I'll quote from Florida State Statute 790.01(4)"It is NOT a violation of this section for a person to carry for purposes of lawful self-defense,in a concealed manner: (a)A SELF-DEFENSE CHEMICAL SPRAY." But then FL tate Statute defines SELF-DEFENSE CHEMCIAL SPRAY in FSS790.001(3)(b)as "Self-Defense Chemical Spray means a device carried solely for purposes of lawful self-defense that is compact in size, designed to be carried on or about the person, and contains not more than two ounces of chemical."

Also I have seen many PO's hurt by women carrying items in their little old purse..
