Kydex rigs for non-knife stuff

I got some Kydex in the mail today, so I'm going to try fixing up some holsters for my lights and knives. I even got a really screwed up idea, to make a holster... for my cell phone!

How much pressure is required to mold the kydex around the phone (with a clamp)? I wouldn't want to crush my phone like a bug, but I also don't want to mold with a heat-gun/hairdryer because that might not be as secure.

Any advice?

Take a piece of wood and cut it to a rough shape that appromimates your cell phone. Then heat the kydex wrap it around and clamp it.
When it cools it should be tight enough for your cell phone to fit. If not figure out a good spot to put a "dimple" in the plastic to kinda of fiction fit your phone.Make sure its on the backside and not the front of the phone.
Good Luck
Jack

Hey Guys...

Jack is correct..

This is one way of doing it...

Not really the way I'd do it,, but it would work...

If it was me,, some of the cell phones I've done are more like a cradle. A problem with is is that you have to do some fairly exact measuring and templates,, and the plastic you would nned is not something you wouldn't commomly buy...

Absolute minimum on one of these rigs would be .093. When I make them I use .125...

Don't press your cell phone..:)

You have to take measures to protect you phone from heat..It shoyuld be all taped off, because heat will be in the area...

Try fooling around with it and Have fun..

Thanks for the replies, I will try things out after I go get some foam and more C-clamps. If I lived within walking distance of Home Depot, I'd never come home.

Do you mean like this?

I made this about a year ago.

It was a fun project but quite labor intensive for what it is. You can't exactly wrap your phone with molten Kydex, foam and put it in a vise :D

Also, here is a Kydex rig I made for a forumites Zeiss Monocular..

I like using Kydex for other things, I've even made a custom holder for my radar detector.

Yep, that's pretty much what I'm talking about. Good to see that it can be done.

cpirtle, did you make a mock-up of your phone, or did you just tape up and spot heat to wrap in kydex?

I did a mock-up of the phone with plaster or paris and molded from that.

I think I still have the mold, phone too but this model kind of sucks and it's due to be replaced :)

I got my stuff from Texas Knifemaker's Supply.

You can buy kydex in as small a quantity as 1'x1', plus many other knifemaking materials. Took a while to ship, but worth it in terms of convenience. Where else am I going to find kydex and eyelets?

I made this leather holster for my cell, a Motorola T193. It is much ease to work with than the Kydex and if I treat it properly it willbe as hard as Kydex.
