Hi All. I know Kydex sheaths will scratch a blade eventually. What's the best way to keep the blade fresh...green scrubbies, wet/dry sandpaper, buffing...???
Thanks.

It really all depends on the finish you have/want. On blades that tend to get scratched a lot, I personally prefer a satin finish with 3/0 emery cloth, or ~600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, which is pretty easy to maintain.

Kydex doesnt scratch hard steel, its the grit that gets in the sheath.. Keep the sheath clean and it will get scratched up less..

Dog of War---Thanks a lot!!
What is 3/0 emery cloth?

You're welcome. :) And BTW, Trace is absolutely right, it's the grit that gets in the Kydex sheath that does the real damage. Unfortunately in the field, with a working knife, it's hard to prevent.

Emery cloth has traditionally been graded as follows, from "3" which is coarsest to "4/0" which is the finest; approximate equivalent mesh for each is shown in the column to the right:
Code:
Grit Mesh

4/0 800
3/0 600
2/0 500
1/0 400
1 280
2 240
3 180

Just don't ask me how they came up with this system.

I like emery cloth because it cuts fast and wears well. More so than other abrasive cloths and papers it does seem to break down into finer grit with use, so a fresh piece will start out fairly aggressive yet wind up giving you a finer finish.

They established a zero point at 400, arbitrarily, and then worked away from it in both directions. So you have 1,2,3 in the positive direction, and Single Aught, Double Aught, Triple Aught, Quadruple Aught in the negative direction.

Anyone else around here old enough to remember when TAD was still a cabinet shop? :)

Never ceases to amaze me, the collected knowledge of BFC members. Thanks for educating me, tsiloics!
